During the Wednesday, June 26 episode of The Squeeze podcast, Angel, 36, told hosts Taylor Lautner and Tay Lautner that the untimely death of her sister Leslie — who died from an overdose in 2012 at age 25 — actually readied her for Aaron, who died at age 34 due to drowning after inhaling difluoroethane and taking alprazolam (a generic form of Xanax).
“What's so interesting about Leslie's passing… she passed away when I was 23, her death completely blindsided me,” Angel shared. “I didn't see that one coming. When she died, I was already in therapy, preparing for Aaron's death. I thought he was gonna die.”
Angel also said that she “feared” Aaron’s eventual death her “entire twenties,” saying, “I knew this day was going to come.”
“I think he knew it, too,” she added, attributing Aaron’s death to the fact that he “could not get out” of his years-long cycle of addiction, though he did seek treatment before he died.
Angel continued explaining how she was a “tough” but “honest” sister to Aaron as she tried to help him battle substance abuse, but he apparently rejected those efforts.
“I was the peacemaker in my family, the mediator. Like, ‘Let's just hug it out. It's gonna be okay.’ And he didn't wanna hear that from me,” she revealed of her brother. “He needed his parents to step up.”
Angel opened up about Aaron’s death and her family’s “painful” past to PEOPLE in 2023. Recalling how her parents abused alcohol growing up, she said those issues created a toxic family dynamic that ultimately worsened after Aaron and their brother Nick were launched into stardom as children.
“Fame and money took over our family,” she shared.
After Aaron spiraled into addiction — which was evident from a handful of arrests for driving under the influence and drug possession — Angel cited the overdose death of sister Leslie and the sudden death of their father, Robert Carter, in 2017 as the “beginning of the end” for her twin brother.
“Aaron was already in a bad place, but it was like a domino effect,” she continued. “He wanted so badly to be happy. He really fought to the end, but he just had too many problems to be fixed. He’d become this person who we no longer recognized. I don’t even think he recognized himself.”
Angel paid tribute to Aaron after he died on Nov. 5, 2022, by posting a series of baby pictures of the two on Instagram. She wrote in a caption, “To my twin… I loved you beyond measure. You will be missed dearly. My funny, sweet Aaron. I have so many memories of you and I, and I promise to cherish them. I know you’re at peace now. I will carry you with me until the day I die and get to see you again. 💔.”
So sad.
