And Just Like That… Season Three Debuts to Surprisingly Not Awful Reviews: ‘Slowly Fixing its Biggest Problem’

I can imagine a Carrie Bradshaw voiceover telling me that some things are just worth the wait. After being disappointed with the first two seasons, I gave myself an ultimatum: If And Just Like That... doesn't find it's way in the third season, then I'm giving up on this show completely. And based on some of the reviews I've read, while not as perfect as Sex and The City, the show finally got it's groove back.

Despite its detractors, the so-hated-its-loved Sex and the City spin-off And Just Like That… is back for season three.

And according to first reviews, it’s still on the messy side, but with some improvements to the first two seasons.

Fans have had two years to digest all that season two offered – that iconic cameo from Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez) going their separate ways, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Aidan (John Corbett) reuniting – and whet their appetite for a third season.

According to the official, vague HBO synopsis, …And Just Like That… season three “follows Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, Seema, and Lisa Todd Wexley navigating the complicated reality of life, love, sex, and friendship in their 50s in New York City”.

The recently-released trailer gives a little more away about what’s happening in season three, as it looks like there will be even more focus on Carrie and Aidan, plus Miranda’s love life in a post Che Diaz climate (Ramirez won’t be returning for season three).

With cameos from the likes of Broadway icon Patti LuPone and queer comedian and chief Donald Trump basher Rosie O’Donnell, season three appears to be shaping up to be a fun one.

Now, first reviews are out in the world, and it looks like And Just Like That… season three is a fun one – or funner than the last two seasons, at least.

In a three-star review for The Telegraph, Michael Hogan writes that “some of the old Sex and the City magic is detectable” for the first time in the spin-off series.

“There are signs that it’s finally getting into its vertiginous-heeled stride. There is still plenty here to mock – and rest assured, we will – but there’s also just enough of the old magic to make this a nostalgic guilty pleasure,” Hogan adds.

Hogan reveals that O’Donnell’s cameo involves her character having her virginity taken by Miranda, which sounds wonderful, but the critic stresses that And Just Like That… is still plagued by a Samantha-shaped hole.

In another three-star review for Metro, Adam Miller similarly writes that And Just Like That… season three starts to correct the wrongs of the first two seasons: namely that Che Diaz is no more, and Miranda is becoming the Miranda of her Sex and the City days again.

“Calls to rid And Just Like That… of any trace of Che Diaz have been heard, Miranda is finally back to being the sharp, quick-witted career-driven lawyer she used to be, and she’s thrown herself straight back into the dating pool,” Miller writes.

There’s another three star review from Nick Hilton in The Independent, who describes season three as “more confident” than its predecessors.

“In its third season, it is being refined back to what the viewers (the ones who haven’t already given up) want more of,” Hilton writes, though he prefaces that by confirming season three’s writing is still “clunky” and some of the acting still “unconvincing”.

IndieWire’s Ben Travers also muses that And Just Like That… season three “inches closer to the Sex and the City sequel these characters deserve”.

“While still prone to irritating unforced errors and lacking the courage to embrace the unknown in ways comparable to the original (and necessary for the revival), And Just Like That… season three is relatively easy to enjoy – or at least harder to hate,” he adds.

So, while And Just Like That… doesn’t seem like a contender for 2025’s TV show of the year, it’s pleasing that there might be just a glint – a tiny little speckle – of Sex and the City finally coming through.

And Just Like That… season three will be available to stream from 29 May on HBO in the US and 30 May on Sky and NOW in the UK.
