Ariana DeBose Fumes Over Lame Joke At Critics Choice Awards Where She Was Lumped In With Actors Who Think They're Singers

Ariana DeBose isn't here for the shade, especially those who assume she's an "actor who thinks they're a singer."

While presenting the award for best song at the show on Sunday, “Last of Us” star Bella Ramsey listed off the “famous voices” in the category, including Billie Eilish, Lenny Kravitz and Dua Lipa, before joking, “And there are the actors who also think that they’re singers: Jack Black, Ariana DeBose, Ryan Gosling.”

The camera panned to the Tony-nominated actress, 32, who looked shocked by the joke before moving on to a laughing Ryan Gosling — whose song, “I’m Just Ken,” from “Barbie” ended up winning the award.

“No I didn’t find it funny. Lol,” DeBose — who was nominated for “This Wish” from Disney’s animated film of the same name — wrote in an Instagram Story following the award ceremony.

The viral clip sparked immediate backlash from DeBose fans, slamming the show’s writers for disrespecting the Broadway star.

“Ariana DeBose, Oscar award winning, Tony nominated, OG cast member of Hamilton on BROADWAY…. ‘THINKS she’s a singer’?!? Who wrote this bit?! I want names #CriticsChoiceAwards,” one fan fumed, with another adding, “Put some respect on Ariana DeBose name!”

“The disrespect to Academy Award winner, Tony nominee, Broadway star, Ariana DeBose is WILD. The look on her face really said it all,” someone wrote.

“imagine the audacity of saying THE oscar winner, broadway trained ariana debose isn’t a SINGER. END THEM MOTHER,” said another, as fans continuously named her biggest singing roles, including “Hamilton” and “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical.”

DeBose took home an Oscar in 2022 for her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” and was nominated for a Tony in 2018 for playing Donna Summer.

The actress has also been back in the news recently after comedian Jo Koy’s rough opening monologue fell flat at the 2024 Golden Globes earlier this month.

“we were so wrong. come back, queen. your people need you,” journalist David Mack wrote on X with a photo of DeBose’s infamous opening monologue song at the 2023 BAFTAs.

The singer went viral last year for rapping about the female nominees, which included the now-famous line, “Angela Bassett did the thing, Viola Davis my Woman King / Blanchett, Cate, you’re a genius, and Jamie Lee, you are all of us!”

Jamie Lee Curtis, who got a shoutout in the opening number, later slammed critics, “These people should shut the f–k up, back the f–k off, and let this woman just shine her light because she is fantastic.”

Whoever wrote that lame joke they need to "cue the sniper," or at least do your research.

If the writers actually did their homework they would know that Ariana is actually a trained singer, who studied singing, dancing and acting. She was on Broadway before she won her Oscar for playing Anita in the remake of West Side Story.

Not only that, but Ryan Gosling is another one who is a trained singer, dancer and actor. He got his start on the Mickey Mouse Club with Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Keri Russell and Christina Aguilera. People just know him more for his acting than his singing, because his cating career is the profession that has kept him steadily employed.

Last, but certainly not least, let's not forget about Jack Black. Are we going to sit here and act like Tenacious D doesn't exist?
