Blade MCU Movie Gets Positive Update Despite Cancellation Rumor

It seems Marvel Studios may have finally decided to pull the plug on the long-awaited Blade reboot, but we're hearing that Marhershala Ali will still get to play the character in Midnight Sons.

Marvel Studios originally announced that a Blade movie was in the works at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019. At the time, it was also announced that Mahershala Ali would play the titular character.

Six and a half years later, the movie has still not come to fruition. No director is attached to the project at this time, and the film does not have a release date.

Yesterday, Jeff Sneider of The InSneider said on an episode of The Hot Mic podcast that “Blade is dead.” He explained, “I’m hearing Blade is dead and that it is a Midnight Sons movie. He will not be introduced in a solo movie. He’ll be introduced in Midnight Sons.”

What is the update on the Blade MCU movie?

Scooper James Mack is now saying that the Blade movie is not actually cancelled. Mack wrote on Twitter, “TheInSneider is acting crazy, Blade was definitely not canceled!”

No further details are available at this time. Given that the Blade movie does not have a release date from Marvel, it seems safe to assume that it won’t be coming anytime soon, if at all. Having said that, there’s been no formal announcement about a Midnight Sons MCU movie as of yet, either. There have, however, been plenty of rumors suggesting that a Midnight Sons project is in development, with some believing that it will be an adaptation of the Damnation limited series, which features Mephisto as the main antagonist.

So far, Ali’s only MCU credit is a voice cameo in the post-credit scene for Eternals. Blade was part of the Marvel Zombies show that was released last year; although, this version of the character is voiced by Todd Williams and is also partially based on Moon Knight.

In other Blade news, The Cosmic Circus' Alex Perez has shared some of what he's heard about Marvel Studios' original plans for Blade. Taking to X, he wrote, "Regarding the plot for the supernatural storyline, the whole point of 'Blade' is to tell the story of Blade and the history behind Ebony Blade, so a title with two meanings."

"And it would have provided some deep lore regarding the supernatural nature of the MCU, vampires, Lilith, the Underworld and more, leading into the Midnight Sons movie," he added.

Marvel Studios abandoned plans for a Blade movie set in the 1920s, while another version was reportedly set to co-star Kit Harington. Whether any of these ideas make it into the next iteration—and whether the movie itself even happens—is now in the "TBD" category.

It astounds me how the MCU cannot figure out how to crack the code regarding Blade. I say just make a Midnight Sons movie, focus on those characters (Blade, Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Elsa Bloodstone Doctor Voodoo, Wong, Moon Knight, Man-Thing ) in a joint film, and spin the characters off eventually with their own solo films. Tone-wise it can be the Guardians of supernatural films.

Maybe with Doctor Strange 3 in the works they can use that film to lead into a Midnight Sons movie and eventually a Blade movie.
