Britney Spears' Ex-Husband Sam Asghari Speaks Out After Pop Star Calls Marriage Her 'Hardest Years'

Britney Spears' ex-husband, Sam Asghari, has spoken out about the pop star's recent comments about their marriage.

“Our marriage was very real to me,” the actor told People (via his rep) in an article published Monday.

“It may have been short, but we were together for seven years. I was in love with her, will always have love for her, and wish her the best always.”

The former professional trainer hit back after the “…Baby One More Time” singer dissed their marriage via Instagram over the weekend.

In a new statement released Monday, The Traitors season 3 competitor reacted to Spears' recent comments about their time together, after they wed in 2022 before separating two years later in 2024.

“Our marriage was very real to me," Asghari said in a statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly.

Through representative Brandon Cohen, the 31-year-old continued, "It may have been short, but we were together for seven years. I was in love with her, will always have love for her, and wish her the best always."

Asghari's comments came after Spears, 43, shared on Instagram on Sunday a statement indicating that her time with her ex-husband represented the "hardest years" of her life, per PEOPLE.

She also claimed that, during her time with Asghari, she was “cut off from calling or texting” her children, including sons Jayden James and Sean Preston, whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

“I remember in shock my secret to survival was denial and a lot of tears its weird me and Sam were married but it almost felt like a fake distraction to help me deal with it," PEOPLE reported Spears said in her post, which was no longer on her Instagram profile as of Tuesday morning.

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to a representative for Asghari for comment.

Asghari additionally spoke about his marriage to Spears in a recent interview with SiriusXM’s Page Six Radio, during which he acknowledged that his connection to the singer helped his career.

"I can’t sit here and lie and say it wasn’t good for me," Asghari told the program. "Of course it gives you, when you’re in such a public relationship, the platform. It sort of gave me that platform for who I am. But I was going there anyway."

He also said that their union added extra hurdles for him to jump over in the industry as well.

"We met on an acting set, we met as co-workers," Asghari added. "I was already auditioning, I just started acting at that moment so I was already doing stuff anyway." But also, "Did it question certain things? Did it make me have to work harder to prove myself? Absolutely," Asghari said.

In addition to his marriage to Spears, Asghari has appeared on scripted TV programs such as Hacks and Dollface, though his longest-running television gig remains The Traitors, on which he competed as a "Faithful," but was eliminated on episode 9.

What I am getting from what Britney is saying (and it's not easy trying to make sense of what's going on in that brain of hers, but I think what she is trying to say is that while she was with Sam (remember she was in the conservatorship at the time of the marriage) she didn't have access to her boys, and the marriage was a distraction as a way for her to deal with her not being able to see her sons.

There is no way you're in a relationship with someone for seven years and nothing real comes from it.
