While speaking to the Los Angeles Times about her new film, Hamnet, Chloé Zhao discussed the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival. When she was asked what she was doing next during that interview, Zhao revealed she'd just finished filming the pilot episode. She also explained how excited she is for the revival while emphasizing her love for the original show. Check out her comments below:
I just wrapped the pilot on the new “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series, which is set 25 years later. My company is part of developing it. The fandom is so special to me and I’m excited about how that’s going to go into the world.

Based on Zhao's comments about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival, there are two main takeaways. The most important takeaway from Zhao's comments is that filming for the revival's pilot has finished.
While it is possible that there could be reshoots, and the plans for the new revival could still be abandoned, that is a huge step for the show and fans alike. It is also an indication that viewers may see the show sooner rather than later.
Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Zhao's comments seem to make it a great thing that she is involved with the revival. Since she is an acclaimed, Academy Award-winning director, her involvement seems like a good idea if she understands why fans love Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Zhao's status as a fan herself makes it very likely that she understands the show's appeal.

When a show has as many beloved episodes as Buffy the Vampire Slayer does, reviving or rebooting the series is going to be a risky endeavor. While having a built-in fan following will give the revival a significant advantage, the expectations will be so high that it could be very difficult to live up to them. Based on what is known about the new show, however, I have faith that the revival series will be great.
I have faith in the new show because I love the idea of bringing Sarah Michelle Gellar back and turning her character into a mentor, and Chloé Zhao's comments about the revival make it seem like she will work hard to make it great. Most importantly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer's story could repeatedly be revived for new generations.
