On Tuesday, May 26, the former NFL star, 34, shared a post on Instagram, showing his reply to a social media user who left a negative comment under one of his recent posts. The user wrote that he feels "bad for that kid," seemingly calling out the fact that Underwood's son Bishop, 20 months, has two fathers.
The proud dad, who shares his son with husband Jordan C. Brown, screenshotted the comment and posted it over a picture of his family of three. In the next three slides, Underwood responded to the comment saying he was "genuinely curious" about what the commenter meant by his "vague, loaded comment."
"Hey Zach — genuinely curious what you meant by this. Because if you 'feel bad' for Bishop, I'd love to understand why," he began. "He's loved, supported, celebrated, Happy and surrounded by people who show up for him every single day."
Underwood went on to say that a "loving family" isn't what children need protecting from, explaining that it's adults and harmful words that hurt a child's development.
"What a child actually needs protection from isn't a loving family. It's 'adults' who use vague, loaded comments to express disapproval they don't have the courage to say out loud," he wrote. "Words like yours, ambiguous enough to deny, pointed enough to would, are exactly how kids learn that who they are is something to be ashamed of."
"That's the thing worth feeling bad about," Underwood added. "Bishop is great. We're great. But thank you for the reminder that this work still matters."
The doting dad continued his thoughts in the caption for his post. He shared that in his new audiobook,DEAR BISHOP: A Letter To My Son, he writes a lot about comments like those, adding that they fuel him to continue living his truth out loud and publicly.
"Comments like this are something I write about a lot in DEAR BISHOP. Some days they don’t affect me. Other days they ruin my day," he wrote. "Most days, they remind me why sharing my life this publicly is worth it…because somewhere there’s a kid, or a man, who might find comfort or something familiar in my story. That’s what keeps me living openly."
In an exclusive excerpt of his audiobook shared with PEOPLE ahead of its release, Underwood shared how his decision to come out as gay was "opening a door" for his son. The Bachelor alum talked about the shame, secrecy and mental health struggles he faced before coming out as gay, the hard work it took to rebuild his life and find self-acceptance and how becoming a dad changed his perspective overall.
"When I came out, I thought I was telling the world who I was. What I didn’t realize was that I was also opening a door for you — for the life that would come later, for this moment, for this letter," said Underwood. "Your other dad, your Dada, was part of that miracle too. He showed me what it looks like to be loved without conditions. He taught me that strength isn’t about control, it’s about vulnerability — showing up with your whole heart, even when it’s messy."
"Together we built a home defined not by perfection but by presence," he continued. "Then you arrived, and everything shifted again."
The former reality TV star said that becoming a father to his son Bishop changed him completely. He explained in the audiobook, available now, that he started focusing on how his son would view him in the future instead of how he was seen by the public.
"Fatherhood stripped away whatever ego I had left," he shared. "Suddenly, it wasn’t about how I was seen, but how you would see me. It wasn’t about legacy or reputation; it was about love — the kind that shows up in the middle of the night, bleary-eyed and humming lullabies, the kind that picks up toys for the hundredth time, that learns to see the world through the wonder in your eyes."
