HBO announced that it has ordered an hour-long series, also titled Crazy Rich Asians, as a follow-up to the 2018 rom-com hit. The series will start production in 2027.

Constance Wu and Henry Golding are returning as the story’s central couple, Rachel Chu and Nick Young. Ronny Chieng will also reprise the role of Eddie, Nick’s cousin. All three actors will be series regulars on the show.

Michelle Yeoh, who won an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once five years after the original Crazy Rich Asians, is also appearing in a recurring capacity as Eleanor Sung-Young, Nick’s stern mother.

Adele Lim, the screenwriter who co-wrote the movie, will serve as showrunner. She will also executive produce alongside Jon M. Chu, the film’s director, as well as Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and Kevin Kwan, the author of the books on which the film and series are based.

“It’s a CRAZY RICH family reunion!” Lim said in a statement. “This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books. Getting to work with the original creative team with the support and vision of HBO and Warner Bros. Television has been a dream. Our writers room is humming and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with.”

Chu, who directed In the Heights and two Wicked films since the release of the film, also shared a statement. “Eight years ago, CRAZY RICH ASIANS changed my life, and I got to make it with the most creative and hilarious group of people I’ve ever known,” he said. “Since then, this cast has become movie stars, superheroes, arena-filling performers and even an Oscar winner, so bringing everyone back together feels like coming home.”

He continued, “It’s been incredible watching audiences make this movie part of their lives, from mahjong nights to becoming the ultimate airplane movie, and I can’t wait to share what comes next. Finally, I get to answer the question I’ve been asked almost every day for eight years: ‘When are we getting the sequel?’ Well… bok bok bitch, we’re back.’”

Released in August 2018, Crazy Rich Asians became one of the most successful romantic comedies in Hollywood history, grossing a whopping $239 million worldwide. The film also starred Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, and Ken Jeong, though there’s no word on whether any of those actors will return for the series.

After releasing the original Crazy Rich Asians novel to widespread popularity in 2013, Kwan wrote two more books with the same characters, 2015’s China Rich Girlfriend and 2017’s Rich People Problems. Warner Bros. originally began developing a theatrical film sequel to the movie in 2018, but the project repeatedly stalled over the years.
