The release of Khalid’s new music video has prompted much debate online this week.

The R&B singer was outed a last November. He responded by confirming that he’s gay. Then this past summer, he performed at his first Pride festival.

The video for his new song “Out Of Body” shows him embracing his queerness in a way he hasn’t publicly done so before. He flirts and dances suggestively with another man in a public restroom.

When a clip of the video went online earlier this week, not everyone was kind. Even some in the queer community criticized it for “trying too hard”… whatever that means.

It also led to comparisons with other Black, gay singers, such as Lil Nas X. Among those to respond was fellow gay R&B singer Destin Conrad.

“Please please please don’t compare me n my musical journey to any other beautiful black gay men and pin queer black men against each other especially as i benefit from colorism!!! boots! it’s tacky!!!!” said Conrad on X.

Among those to reply was Khalid, who said those making comparisons were unaware that he and Conrad were friends.

“Destin I love you!!!!!” he said. “They don’t even know we like 🤞🏾”

In other words, the world is big enough for more than one Black, gay R&B singer.

Policing queerness

In a subsequent tweet, Conrad criticized gay people seeking to “police queerness”.

In a third tweet, Conrad simply wished for “MORE BLACK GAY BOYS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY!!!!!!!!”

That tweet received over 12k likes and hundreds of comments. Many replies came from Black artists wishing to promote their work. The wealth of talent on display was inspiring.

Dozens more showcased their work in the comments, to the joy of those wishing to discover more queer talent. Some people suggested there should be a label dedicated to working with these artists. Others asked for someone to at least compile a Spotify playlist of all the music on offer.

British singer MNEK agreed with the sentiment of Conrad’s post.

Should you wish to discover some new talent, do check out the many replies to Conrad’s tweet.

And, if you want to check out Khalid’s new video, it dropped on Friday. Watch it below.
