Even though Universal/Blumhouse-Atomic Monster’s Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 at $63M domestic didn’t beat the original movie’s $80M opening, it was still pretty damn good, particularly for a PG-13 horror movie in December. Let’s take a look at the Emma Tammi-directed film, which also raked in $46M abroad for a $109M global opening. It should be noted that the sequel was a pure theatrical release unlike its first chapter which went day-and-date theatrical with Universal streaming service Peacock.
Biggest Opening Ever for a Post-Thanksgiving Theatrical Release, beating Warner Bros’ 2003 Tom Cruise epic The Last Samurai ($24.2M).
Biggest Opening Ever for the 49th Weekend of the Year, ahead of 2001’s Warner Bros. movie, Ocean’s Eleven ($38.1M).
Biggest No. 1 Weekend For a Movie During Post-Thanksgiving Weekend, beating last year’s record set by Moana 2 which had a second weekend in the post holiday frame of $51.2M.
Biggest Weekend Ever in the Post-Thanksgiving Period for All Titles at $150M, ahead of last year’s record of $137.2M.
Biggest December Horror Opening, topping 1997’s Scream 2 at $32.9M.
