Grace Jones Praises Beyoncé After Rejecting Temporary Attention From Past Pop Acts

It's been two months since the release of Renaissance, and music and fashion icon Grace Jones is opening up about her collaboration with Beyoncé on her latest album.

Here's what she had to say about Beyoncé in a recent interview with Vanity Fair:

“I know Beyoncé from many years ago, so it’s coming from a church place.

It was like, ‘Will you bless me with your voice on this?’ She’s a beautiful person, a beautiful talent.”

If you are an artist in the industry, you know you are the real deal if you can get someone like Grace Jones on your project. Many have tried and failed at the attempt, from Rihanna who has been deeply influenced by Grace via her music catalogue and fashion sense, and Lady Gaga, who Grace described a few years ago on the Sirius XM radio show Bevelations as 'someone she didn't feel had a soul.'

“Gaga came to me, and I just could not find a soul,” Jones told Bevy Smith. “I come from church — maybe that has something to do with it. I like to get to the soul of a person. I just didn’t feel a soul.”

What she said about Gaga is something I have said for years. No one is denying her talent, but in regards to her anesthetic, who is the real person behind the facade, the character of Lady Gaga.

Who is Stefani Germanotta? I'm sure at the time Gaga hadn't figured out how to balance the real her and the persona. Now that the pop star has taken the time to work through her past traumas, maybe Grace would be open to a collaboration down the road, but my gut tells me it's highly unlikely.

Sidebar: I also love how Grace will work with people who are authentic to their art, most recently drag club icon and musician Kevin Aviance, who also appears on Beyoncé's Renaissance album. Earlier this week he appeared at her NYFW kickoff party that she hosted for Boy Smells fragrance with founder Matthew Herman.
