Hannah Einbinder Slams Ed Sheeran Over Macklemore Controversy: ‘I hope You Get a REALLY Bad Sunburn’

Hannah Einbinder has taken a playful swipe at Ed Sheeran in an Instagram Story, joking that she hopes he gets a “REALLY bad sun burn” on top of a post about his reported net worth.

Following the singer’s statements about Macklemore being dropped from his Loop tour, Einbinder shared a pointed message to the British musician.

“Ed Sheeran i say this as a ginger. i hope you get a REALLY bad sun burn [sic] the kind on the back of your entire body where it hurts to lie down or walk or sit,” she shared on her Instagram Story on Tuesday.

Einbinder then posted a poem called “Apolitical Intellectuals” by Guatemalan activist Otto René Castillo. She also reshared posts from Sheeran’s supporting acts that pulled out of the Loop tour, including North America openers Aaron Rowe and Lukas Graham; Sheeran’s backing band Beoga; and South America opener Finneas.

Sheeran has been receiving backlash after Macklemore was dropped as an opener for the Loop tour. The “Thrift Shop” rapper revealed that he was removed after sharing pro-Palestine statements on stage at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, including the phrase, “Free Palestine.” He said that Sheeran received a call from Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft, who said Macklemore would not be allowed to play his venue or several others across the U.S.

Macklemore added that Sheeran, who he called “typically apolitical,” had said the phrase “Free Palestine” and the Palestinian flag “were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with.”

“I didn’t need 10 shows from Ed. I needed 2,” Macklemore said on Monday. “Two chances to stand in front of 90,000 people and say the words that somehow became too dangerous to say. Free Palestine. But if those words cost me the stage, while turning the conversation back to Palestine, then it was the most successful tour I’ve ever been on.”

Sheeran responded to Macklemore’s statements on Tuesday, saying he is “appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine.” He added that the decision to remove the “Same Love” rapper “was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine.”

The “Thinking Out Loud” singer noted that while he has “personal views” on the conflict in the Middle East, he chooses not to speak about them publicly.

“It doesn’t mean I don’t care. Nor does it mean I don’t support causes in my own, personal way,” he added.

In the wake of Sheeran’s message, his remaining openers and backing band dropped out of The Loop tour, each standing in solidarity with Macklemore and Palestinians in Gaza.

“Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed,” Finneas wrote on Instagram on Tuesday. “I stand with Palestine and its people.”

Einbinder herself has long been outspoken about her support for Palestinians. During the 2025 Emmy Awards, she wore an Artists 4 Ceasefire pin and spoke about Palestine in her acceptance speech for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her role in Hacks.

“I just want to say, finally, go Birds, f--- ICE, and free Palestine!” she said.

Speaking backstage about her decision to mention Palestine in her speech, Einbinder said the conflict in Gaza is “an issue that’s very dear to my heart.”

“I have friends in Gaza who are working as frontline workers, as doctors right now in the north of Gaza to provide care for pregnant women and for school children to create schools in the refugee camps,” she said at the time. “I feel it is my obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the state of Israel because our religion and our culture is such an important and long-standing, basically, institution that is really separate to this sort of ethnonationalist state.”
