A clip from the July 10th episode of Celebrity Family Feud has sparked a divisive debate on the internet.
The 11th season kicked off with celebrities Jennifer "Screamifer" Hudson and Taraji P Henson going head to head to raise money for their respective charities. Taraji represented the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, while Jennifer played for her own Jennifer Hudson Foundation.
One of the questions asked during the episode was to name the best R&B group of all time. Destiny’s Child, TLC, SWV, and The Supremes made the list—but when the Spice Girls popped up, both Taraji and Jennifer raised an eyebrow, screaming out to the audience that they were more pop than R&B.
The clip has since gone viral and kicked off a debate across social media, with many insisting the UK girl group doesn’t belong on any R&B lists.
“Ain’t no way the Spice Girls belong on any credible best-of R&B list,” one user wrote. Another said: “They def gave up some good R&B songs though.”
Here's my thoughts on this debate. While Spice Girls are primarily known as a pop group (which basically means popular), we're not going to sit here and act like their music doesn't incorporate elements of R&B, particularly on their third album, "Forever". Their earlier albums, "Spice" and "Spice World," also featured some R&B influences alongside dance-pop and other genres.
Say You'll Be There, 2 Become 1, have elements of R&B. "Stop" is a dance-pop song with influences of Motown and blue-eyed soul, However, if you're talking about best R&B girl group of all time, Spice Girls do not belong on that list, just like Salt N Pepa, who were a hip hop girl group do not belong on that list.
If I had to choose who should have been on the list I would pick SWV, The Pointer Sisters, or Sister Sledge.
