Madonna’s Family Reportedly Concerned About her Health as They Urge Her to ‘Slow Down’ After VMAs
Madonna's return to the MTV Video Music Awards was supposed to look like another victory lap. Instead, the 68-year-old walked away with seven trophies while also raising concerns about what comes next.

23 years after she snogged Britney Spears, Madonna returned to the VMAs to perform a medley of songs alongside Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter. The energy-packed performance allegedly left the icon with an urge to get back on the road and tour Confessions II.
Madonna led the 2026 VMAs with seven wins, including Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration for "Bring Your Love" with Sabrina Carpenter, Best Dance, Best Album, Best Long Form Video, Best Choreography and Best Cinematography.
“There’s a big debate between her and her team as to how the format of the show will be. She wants to do something big but knows the reality that she can’t do the more extensive tours that she’s done in the past, probably because in some of her more recent concerts, it was too taxing for her,” a source close to the singer told the MailOnline.
“I think she wants to scale it down, but the people around her are probably not wanting her to do anything at all other than a very small and limited run with no more than ten shows in ten cities.”
Though I’m sure that a Madonna tour would sell out in record time, the prospect of her going on the road has reportedly left some loved ones worried.
Madonna’s family are scared for her health
Over the last few years, Madonna has battled some quite serious health problems that left her hospitalised and her family “preparing for the worst.”
“I’m pretty sure that was God saying to me, ‘Do you want to come? Want to come up with me?'” she questioned in 2024.
Given the energetic nature of her songs, with the majority of Confessions II being dance tracks, the idea of another tour has sparked some concerns. The MailOnline referred to it as an “intervention” from her family, which came after her high-intensity VMAs performance.
“She is having everyone around her tell her to actually slow down. She says she has more energy than ever, but her family and friends are saying, ‘Take it easy,'” the source explained.
The same source said she is already "showing signs of wanting to hit the road" behind "Confessions II," despite concerns from those around her.
Warner Records released the album July 3 as a continuation of 2005's "Confessions on a Dance Floor."
That desire to tour is reportedly creating tension because the question is no longer simply whether Madonna can perform but how much performing her team believes is realistic.
Despite that, a different source added: “Madonna is full of energy. She just wants to get right straight back to work.”
Of course, this comes after Ariana Grande took a break to focus on herself after back-to-back projects. Being an icon is knackering.
Madonna And Her Team Are Divided Over Another Tour
One insider described a "big debate" between Madonna and her team over the format of any future live show.
Madonna allegedly wants to "do something big," but the source said she knows she may no longer be able to mount the extensive tours she completed in earlier decades.
Her team is reportedly pushing for something dramatically smaller, possibly no more than ten shows in ten cities.
That caution is rooted partly in Madonna's medical history. In 2023, her Celebration Tour was postponed after manager Guy Oseary announced that she had developed a serious bacterial infection and spent several days in intensive care.
Madonna later told Jay Shetty on "On Purpose" that she had sepsis, woke after being unconscious for four days and had been on a ventilator. She recalled struggling with extreme weakness afterward.
Still, the Daily Mail insider stressed that Madonna does not view the situation as a retreat.
"Madonna is full of energy," the source said. "She just wants to get right straight back to work."
Madonna Is Still Fighting To Control Her Life Story
Touring is not the only major project occupying her attention.
A second Daily Mail source claimed the success of "Confessions II" has revived interest in Madonna's long-delayed biopic, with Warner and A24 among the companies said to be curious about the project.
Madonna has already confirmed why the original version collapsed. In June, she said she and Universal had a "falling out" over the budget after she spent years developing the movie, which had Julia Garner attached to portray her.
"I've had an extraordinary life. I've had a huge life, so I needed a big budget," she explained.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Madonna even explored making the project for less money in Serbia, while a potential Netflix series also failed to come together.
According to the insider, Madonna remains unwilling to compromise too far because controlling how her story is told matters deeply to her.
The source described her as a "control freak," but argued that she believes such control is necessary after watching other stars lose authority over how their lives were portrayed.
The insider specifically cited Madonna's concerns about a Michael Jackson television biopic and claimed she fears a low budget could flatten the many eras of her career.
Madonna's Next Move Could Test How Much She Is Willing To Scale Back
Her seven VMA wins confirmed that "Confessions II" has kept her creative momentum moving, but insiders suggest the people around her are trying to persuade Madonna that continuing does not have to mean continuing exactly as before.
Alongside the possible tour and renewed biopic push, the Daily Mail source also pointed to another music video expected in October, suggesting her schedule may stay busy regardless of whether a major tour happens.
That makes the debate less about retirement than recalibration.
Madonna has spent much of her career refusing to accept limits imposed by age, genre or controversy. Her team's reported challenge now is convincing her that scaling down a tour or slowing her pace would not erase that legacy.
For Madonna, however, the instinct appears unchanged. Even after a VMAs performance that left some fans worried and family members asking her to take it easy, those close to her say she is already looking toward the next thing.
