‘Miami Vice’ Reboot With Michael B. Jordan, Austin Butler Gets Official Title: ‘Miami Vice ’85’

Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler‘s “Miami Vice” reboot is officially confirmed, with the new title “Miami Vice ’85.”

Universal Pictures’ upcoming Miami Vice movie officially has its Tubbs and Crockett as well a title, as Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are set to star in Miami Vice ’85 with Joseph Kosinski directing. The film will be shot for Imax and is set to bow on August 6, 2027.

The film explores the glamour and corruption of mid-’80s Miami in an all-new version of Miami Vice, inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark Universal Television series that influenced culture and set the style in everything from fashion to filmmaking.

Deadline reported last fall that Jordan and Butler were in talks to star in the pic, but it was not expected to begin production until fall of 2026, so there was no rush to close deals. Insiders add that the film only recently had its budget greenlighted, and deals for Jordan and Butler closed soon after the studio gave the thumbs up.

The film will be produced by Dylan Clark and his Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski. Nightcrawler Oscar nominee Dan Gilroy is writing the script, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the series executive produced by Yerkovich and Michael Mann. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay.

EVP Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Christina Hoffrogge will oversee the project for Universal.

Jordan won the Oscar and the Actor Award for his dual lead performance in Sinners, his fifth collaboration with director Ryan Coogler. Upon its release in March 2025, Sinners became a critical, cultural and box office juggernaut, marking the biggest debut for an original film since 2019.

Next up, Jordan will direct, star and produce a reimagining of The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM Studios. The film hits theaters worldwide on March 5, 2027.

Butler’s performance as Elvis Presley in Elvis earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor along with Golden Globe and BAFTA wins. He since has delivered roles as the chilling Feyd-Rautha in Dune: Part Two (2024), biker Benny in The Bikeriders (2023), and Major Gale “Buck” Cleven in Masters of the Air (2024). Upcoming, he will star in the A24 crime thriller Enemies with Jeremy Allen White.

Jordan is represented by 1v1 Entertainment, WME and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Butler is repped by WME, Brillstein and Sloane Offer Weber & Dern. Kosinski is represented by CAA, Untitled Entertainment and Sloane Offer. Clark is represented by CAA. Gilroy is represented by CAA, LBI and Behr Abramson Levy Johnson.
