Milla Jovovich Responds After the Academy Posts a Tribute to Her Resident Evil Movies as Reboot Opens in Theaters

The actress is receiving some praise from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for her work with the Resident Evil franchise as the new reboot from Weapons writer-director Zach Cregger hits theaters.

Jovovich, 50, starred in six Resident Evil movies, based on the popular video game series of the same name, produced between 2002 and 2016. The actress even met her husband Paul W.S. Anderson, who directed each of those films, through working together on the franchise.

With a new take releasing Friday, Sept. 18, the Academy took the time to share images of Jovovich in each of her Resident Evil movies on Instagram. “Just an appreciation post for Milla Jovovich as Alice in the RESIDENT EVIL franchise,” the Academy wrote in a caption to its post.

“❤️☺️,” the actress wrote in response.

“Listen, Resident Evil is literally what my family is built on. I met my husband through it, we had three kids through it,” Jovovich told PEOPLE in January, regarding her and Anderson’s opinion on Cregger’s turn with the franchise. (The couple married in 2009 and share daughters Ever, 18, Dashiel, 11, and Osian, 6.)

“But I think if anyone could do that film justice, it’s Zach. He’s such a phenomenal artist, and I think it’s about time that Resident Evil got remade the right way,” she added. “So I hope for the best, it’s going to be really fun to see his take on it.”

In the new Resident Evil, Austin Abrams, 30, stars as “a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos,” reads an official synopsis for the movie. Severance‘s Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser also star in the movie. ScreenRant reported in April that Cregger said the movie takes place “maybe on the periphery of the events of Resident Evil 2,” the video game that released in 1998.

Resident Evil is in theaters now. Jovovich most recently appeared in the movies Protector and Worldbreaker.
