Back in 2024, several studios were in a bidding war for Adam Wingard’s “Onslaught” — billed as a return to his thriller indie roots. A24 finally landed the project.
The film wrapped production in January 2025, and some expected it to potentially hit theaters that same year, but post-production seems to have taken longer than expected. We now finally have a release date.
A trailer for “Onslaught” is now playing before “Backrooms” in theaters nationwide, and will hit theaters on September 4, 2026. That’s 20 months since production wrapped. Maybe A24 was waiting for the right date to position this one — Labor Day weekend seems like an odd fit, but we’ll see how it works out.
Adria Arjona leads the film as a struggling mother, living in a trailer park, who aims to protect her loved ones from a threat that escaped a secret military base, while mercenaries try to contain it.
When I caught the trailer before seeing Backrooms, I immediately got excited because A) I love seeing Adria Arjona in anything (rooting for her to become the DCU's Wonder Woman) and B) I was a huge fan of The Guest when I saw it on a whim back in 2014.
Onslaught gives that same vibe as The Guest, and the super soldiers give Uber Jason Voorhees vibes, and clearly Adam was inspired by Sarah Connor in T2 when casting Arjona as the film's heroine, so I am definitely here for whatever this movie is.
Onslaught stars Rebecca Hall (The Night House, Godzilla x Kong) and Dan Stevens (The Guest) also star in Adam Wingard’s upcoming new movie Onslaught alongside Michael Biehn, Reginald VelJohnson, Eric Wareheim, Drew Starkey, and Alex “Poatan” Pereira.
In addition to The Guest, Simon Barrett wrote You’re Next for Wingard to direct, with Barrett more recently scripting the recent action-horror movie Azrael starring Samara Weaving.
