Sarah Michelle Gellar Has Seen the New I Know What You Did Last Summer, While Husband Film Star Freddie Prinze Jr Hasn't

Sarah Michelle Gellar, for one, is excited about the upcoming release of the new I Know What You Did Last Summer, and she should know.

Despite not returning for the hotly anticipated followup to slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer, Sarah Michelle Gellar knows more about the sequel than her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., who reprises his original role in the film.

“I actually have seen it,” the Buffy and the Vampire Slayer star said recently on the Today show. “I’m one of the only people that have seen the movie, including my husband [who] has not seen it yet.”

When pressed for details by the anchors, Gellar cheekily teased: “Guess what? Somebody kills someone and they get a letter, and it says, ‘I know what you did last summer.’ But that’s just for you guys — don’t [tell anyone].”

Writer-director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson‘s IKWYDLS follows new faces who are confronted with blackmail — and murder — after their crime from the past summer comes back to haunt them. Stars Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt reprise their characters alongside newcomers Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Haur-King, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols and Gabbriette.

As Robinson said recently, she tried in earnest to get Gellar on board — despite the character being killed off in the original 1997 pic.

“I tried, okay? I harassed her! But she is dead,” she told Entertainment Weekly last month. “I tried to pitch some crazy s— too. I was like, ‘What if it’s like you weren’t dead and you’re actually alive, but in hiding?’ And Sarah’s like, ‘I was on ice. I was the most dead a person could be. You can see my frozen body.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, but what if?’ And she said, ‘I am dead. I am Sarah Dead Gellar.’”

Elsewhere on the program, Gellar discussed her wrapping of another sequel treatment in Ready or Not: Here I Come, the followup to the 2019 horror comedy starring Samara Weaving, which she just finished filming in Toronto.

When asked what she could preview about the project, she replied, “Absolutely nothing! They have sworn us to all secrecy — I can’t even tell you my character’s name … It’s a movie — well, it’s a sequel to Ready or Not, which, it was one of those movies when I saw, it I was like, ‘Why couldn’t I be in that movie? I wanna play that role, 15 years ago,’ but then here I am.”
