We are nine months away from the highly-anticipated Scream 7 slicing and dicing it's way into theaters, and rumors are swirling that there is an eighth installment already in the works that will be centered yet again around franchise final girl Sidney Prescott.
Before Scream 7 even wrapped, there were rumors circulating that the upcoming horror film would end on a clffhanger, and would be setting up a possible trilogy. We won't know for certain until the movie is released if that turns out to be true.
However, according to industry scooper @DanielRPK, Scream 8 was immediately greenlit because Paramount and Spyglass are happy with everything regarding the seventh installment. There's also word that not only do they want Kevin Williamson back to direct, but they also want him to write the script. If all goes to plan Scream 8 could start shooting this summer.
For those unaware, Williamson wrote the original Scream script as well as Scream 2 and Scream 4. While Scream 7 was written by Guy Busick, from a story by James Vanderbilt and Busick, I'm sure Kevin had some uncredited imput on the new script, because to be honest I thought while Scream 5 and 6 had some cool standout moments, the scripts for those films (which were written by Vanderbilt and Busick) weren't strong enough for my horror conoisseur tastes.
I also didn't like the way the legacy characters such as Sidney, Dewey RIley and Gale Weathers were treated once Radio Silence took over the franchise, because it just felt like they tossed our icons to the side to make room for the core four.
Speaking of the core four, rumors are also swirling that the core four story will be addressed, with the Carpenter sisters being killed off in a plane crash, and that the Meeks-Martin twins will be brutally killed off. I'm guessing that this is to make up for the uncalled for death of Dewey by Amber in Scream 5. So once they get the course correction out of the way, the film(s) will be focusing on Sidney and her family.
While I am happy that we are getting an eighth film, I don't know if I like the idea of them shooting the next film so early when we have no idea who survives and who dies in the seventh film. The one thing that I love about the Scream franchise is that it's the slasher equivalent of Scooby Doo.
We Scream fans go to see these films so we can figure out who the killer(s) are before it's spoiled all over social media. And with certain pundits on social media and YouTube spilling all kinds of unauthorized theories for clicks, likes and virality I like going into these films blind.
I also know some people complain about Neve appearing in most of the films, that it's time to branch out and tell other stories, which we have seen in other long-in-the-tooth slashers. However if there is a story to be told with the same character that spans decades (almost three to be exact), then as long as the story is good I'm all for spending time with Sidney Prescott.
So what I'm hoping is that Scream pulls a Weapons and opts to move the film from 2026 to September or October of this year, film the eighth film during the summer, and release it next year in time for the 30th anniversary of the original film.
