There’s always been a running joke about Jennifer Lopez‘s singing ability since singers like Ashanti, Nadia Ramos and Y’Anna Crawley can be credited for some of JLo’s biggest hits.

However, her longtime friend/vocal coach Stevie Mackey is shutting down any naysayers with a snippet of Lopez rehearsing a number from the musical, Kiss Of The Spider Woman.

Under the video from his Instagram, he wrote, “Singing big musical theater numbers isn’t easy, these songs were filled with intricate melodies, complicated chords, insane modulations, and very long notes. So proud of you @jlo for putting in 110% of the effort it takes to become the superstar you are. Your brilliance shines on and off screen.”

The comments (which have now been limited) were divided. Singer-actress Lorea Turner replied, “She’s literally singing theater???? This is actually really good considering WHAT she’s singing. Go J-Lo!” SWV’s LeeLee commented, “Wow!! I love it!! That’s the big voice. Go head JLo, yessss.” Acclaimed duo, The War and Treaty added, “@steviemackey brilliant. @jlo your joy in this clip comes through in your vocals even if it’s a scene where [you’re] killing [fire emojis].”

A few of the shadier comments featured memes from Whitney Houston, Prince, and Mariah Carey while others wrote, “She really thought she did something,” and “The audacity. The delusion. I cannot.”

In Lopez’s defense, one fan chimed in: “It’s called theater for a reason ppl. Her vocal range is supposed to be unpredictable. She’s not singing an R&B [ballad]. Sometimes the unkindness humanity is nauseating.”

Kiss Of The Spider Woman is a “dream come true” for Lopez since she’s wanted to be in movie-musical her whole life. Ahead of the film’s theatrical release, she said on Instagram, “‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ is so close to my heart. Living out my childhood dreams with this one!!” She stars as Aurora, Ingrid Luna, and The Spider Woman.

PEOPLE reported that the film was praised at Sundance earlier this year with Lopez telling the crowd that she was “made for this movie.”

It’s currently out in theaters.

*****

For a theatrical version of a Broadway musical...Hennifer did a good enough job vocally with what she has, and I truly believe Stevie has helped her come a long way with improving vocally. As for the dream of doing this eight nights a week on a Broadway stage, oh she'd be giving pitch city. I cannot see her sustaining the same kind of vocal stamina it takes to perform on a real Broadway stage.
