The new movie marks her fifth collaboration with Perry, after “I Can Do Bad All By Myself,” “The Family That Preys,” “Acrimony” and “Straw,” which was a hit for Netflix earlier this year.
Perry, who wrote, produced and is directing the film, also stars as one of the eight college friends who wrestle with challenges in their marriages during their annual reunions.
The logline for “Why Did I Get Married Again?” is as follows: “The couples reunite in celebration as Marcus (White) and Angela’s (Smith) daughter prepares to tie the knot. After being apart for quite some time, they learn quickly that as much as things change, they stay the same. Realizing their children have grown up to be so much like them, they must reflect on the examples they’ve set and ask themselves that age-old question, why did they get married… again?”
Armani Greer, Everett Osborne, Da’Vinchi, Laya Deleon Hayes, Jaden Michael, Charles L. Smith, Derrick A. King and Sydney Winbush round out the cast. The project is currently filming on location in Italy.

“Why Did I Get Married Again?” is the latest film out of Perry’s creative partnership with Netflix, which sees him write, direct, and produce films, series, and faith-based features for the streamer. Perry’s most recent film, “Ruth & Boaz,” launched on Friday and currently ranks in the global top 10 movies list. The Bible-inspired romance, which he produced alongside DeVon Franklin, continues a string of streaming hits, following “Madea’s Destination Wedding” and “Straw.”
The original movie, 2007’s “Why Did I Get Married?,” which was inspired by Perry’s play of the same name, was a box office hit — opening at No. 1 in. the U.S. on the way to a $55.8 million global tally. The 2010 sequel “Why Did I Get Married Too?” earned $60.6 million worldwide. Then, Perry created the spinoff series “Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse,” with Smith and White reprising their roles as mercurial marrieds Angela and Marcus; the sitcom premiered on TBS in 2011, where it ran for two seasons before moving to OWN for four more.
In July, Perry teased that the threequel was finally in the works by posting the cover page of the “table draft” version of the script for the movie, with the caption “I’m just gonna sit this right here!” Perry also conspicuously tagged the franchise’s main cast, including Janet Jackson, though the music legend was not listed in the official announcement on Wednesday.
