‘The View’s Sunny Hostin Accuses Trump Of Using The Presidency To “Avoid Going To Jail”

Sunny Hostin is saying the quiet part out loud, by accusing Donald Trump of exploiting the presidency to avoid being thrown behind bars.

The hosts were discussing former special counsel Jack Smith’s recent testimony before the House Judiciary Committee, in which he claimed he found evidence that Trump “willfully broke the law” and kept classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate, which is illegal, according to ABC News.

“If he’s saying that he has the goods on the guy and that he broke the law, that he was hoarding classified documents, and etcetera. Why isn’t Trump in jail?” Joy Behar asked her co-hosts.

Alyssa Farah Griffin was first to respond, reminding Behar, “Because he won the election and 75 million people still voted for him, despite these facts.”

But Behar pushed further. “But if no one is above the law and even if he did win the election, why isn’t he in jail?” she asked.

Hostin explained that Department of Justice policies make it so that a sitting president cannot be indicted or prosecuted.

During his testimony, Smith claimed he found “proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in criminal activity” during his investigation into whether Trump interfered in the 2020 election. But Smith was forced to drop the case when Trump was reelected in 2024 because of the Justice Department policy.

“It’s been DOJ policy for a long time,” she told Behar, before adding, “I’ve said this before: I really do believe that the reason President Trump ran for the office of presidency again is because he wanted to avoid going to jail.”

Sara Haines pointed out that Trump likely hasn’t stepped down from office because he “hasn’t been held accountable,” adding, “He’s been saying since he came down the escalator that he can shoot someone and get away with it.”

This comes just after Hostin criticized Trump’s recent remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, complaining that his behavior was “deeply unserious and so deeply unpresidential.”

“It’s sad and an embarrassment to our country,” Hostin said. “It’s an embarrassment to Americans. I’m so disgusted by this.”

She also called him an “imperialist president” amid his continued threats to take Greenland for the United States.

“Every single country is at risk,” she warned on The View earlier this week. “This is an imperialist president. He wants to colonize everybody, every country.”
