Thundercats Movie In The Works At Warner Bros

It's official: After the big screen return of He-Man in Masters of the Universe, another major studio is working on an iconic fantasy property from the same era.

The 1985 animated series “ThunderCats” has had a bit of a revival in the last 15 years with a reimagining series in 2011 at Cartoon Network and in 2020 there was the short-lived “ThunderCats Roar,” that attempted to make a more silly version taking cues from more modern shows (felt like “Adventure Time” and “Steven Universe” were sort of an inspiration), in the wake of those shows, it was announced in 2021 that Monsterverse director Adam Wingard (“Onslaught”) would be tackling a feature film at Warner Bros. that would be a mix of CGI and traditional animated elements.

Speaking of that movie, during the Annecy Film Festival, it was announced by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation (via DiscussingFilm) that they would be developing an animated film. However, it’s unclear if this is replacing Wingard’s film, if that project is pivoting to strictly animation, or something entirely new that will be happening alongside it.

Sadly, there are lots of unknowns going on here with this news, so we’ll have to be a tad patient to learn more about what is actually happening here with this animated film that was announced. Then again, Wingard is no stranger to PG-13 studio IP after tackling “Godzilla vs. Kong,” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” so we’ll be very curious to see if he’s still co-writing and directing.

As of March 2024, Wingard was calling his “ThunderCats” movie a “priority” and was writing the script with longtime creative partner, Simon Barrett (things can change in two years). Wingard’s latest flick, “Onslaught,” a military genre action-horror flick that feels like it’s directly connected to the world of “The Guest,” and starring Adria Arjona (“Man of Tomorrow,” “Andor”) as a bad-ass protagonist that is faced with a super-soldier experiment on the loose, is heading to theaters on September 4.

Another cool thing announced at the event is that a new “The Powerpuff Girls” film is also in the works at WB Pictures Animation. This comes after a failed CW pilot for a live-action TV series from Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (“Juno,” “Jennifer’s Body,” “Lisa Frankenstein”) that failed to get a series pick-up.
