Trixie Mattel Explains Why All Stars 3 Was An ‘Odd Season to Win’

Drag Race All Stars 3 winner Trixie Mattel is opening up about her shocking All Stars win, and why her crowning felt like a "technicality."

It was always going to be hard to follow up the legendary RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 2, but All Stars 3 did a pretty good job of it.

A stacked cast that saw some legendary TV moments was paired with some decisions that fans weren’t all thrilled with, but the spinoff crowned a more than worthy winner in season 7 fan favourite Trixie Mattel.

The season’s ‘Jury’ twist saw the six eliminated competitors, including BenDeLaCreme, who sensationally eliminated herself mid-season, select the top two, picking Trixie and season 7 co-star Kennedy Davenport.

That left season one winner Bebe Zahara Benet (the first winner to return to Drag Race) and Shangela (who, at the time, was a huge Drag Race fan favourite), cut from the final lipsync.

Trixie won two challenges before snatching the crown, but in a new video posted to her YouTube channel, the Milwaukee native explained that at the time, she felt she won “on a technicality” due to DeLa’s departure, and Shangela not making the top two.

“You had Shangela, who people really wanted at the top, and DeLa, who did so well and then left – it was a very odd season to win.”

In classic Mattel fashion, Trixie then explained via metaphor what snatching the All Stars 3 crown felt like.

“The way I retroactively felt seen in media was – maybe this sounds crazy – but … I was watching Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, and they were playing tennis together for a world championship [the 2018 US Open], and Naomi, who was amazing, won.

“But she won because Serena got a bunch of penalties. And so people were mad because they tuned in for a giant world championship, and what they got was a win on a technicality.

“At the time, it really felt like that. I felt like I couldn’t really celebrate winning, because it wasn’t maybe the way people wanted [it to go].”

Mattel added, “Winning is an odd thing, but I’ll tell you this. It’s sure f**king better than losing.”
