The singer said Diddy was a “mentor” to him and his experience with the rap star didn’t match how he’s been represented.
Usher said in an interview with Forbes’ The Enterprise Zone that the one word he would use to describe Diddy is “legacy.”
After interviewer Jabari Young said Usher had managed to avoid “a lot of the negativity that we obviously know shows up in [Diddy’s] story today,” the singer clarified his stance on the disgraced rap mogul.
Usher said his “controversial” opinion was that “we can’t ignore the reality of history.”
“In many ways, I think certain people are prosecuted and maybe not recognized for the greatness that they offer,” Usher said.

“I don’t have anything negative to say about Sean Combs because my experience was not what the world has seen and how he’s been misrepresented.”
Usher has worked with Diddy since he began his career as a teen, and told Forbes that he valued the rap star as a “mentor” who reminded him of a “really, really hard teacher.”
“I can’t, with any sense of humanity, not recognize the valuable contributions that this man made for us as Black entrepreneurs, for us as businessmen, for us as people who transition culture and ideas into something that’s tangible and becomes business,” Usher said.
“So many people benefited from what he created. And I acknowledge that. And that’s why I see him as legacy.

“I put respect on his name because I realized that what I learned as a businessman before I even understood what business was came as a result of seeing the incredible things that he was able to do and the way that he positioned himself as a businessman,” Usher added.
Diddy was indicted on charges of sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution in 2024.
He was accused of sexual assault and sued by dozens of people, but denied the allegations.
He was convicted of two charges of transportation to engage in prostitution and sentenced to 50 months in prison, with a release date of April 25, 2028.

However, fans have since reacted to Usher's words, taking to social media as one person said on X, "Usher…my long-time inspiration…being bleak and not an apologist for Combs' dangerous actions. I really cannot fathom this. You can certainly praise someone's work ethic and condemn their exposed demons simultaneously. I am shattered with disappointment in you."
A second fan then added, "Misrepresented?? Oh Usher…" while a third music fan jumped in to say, "Pretty big gulf between 'not every man is perfect' and Diddy."
"You can big up his achievements without downplaying that he was a menace. He isn’t misrepresented in any way," concluded a fourth disappointed fan.
