VMAs Fate Revealed as CBS Execs Reel Over ‘Embarrassing’ Show After Last-Ditch Ratings Ploy

Madonna and Taylor Swift reportedly had MTV bosses jumping through hoops at the VMAs, with strict photo rules and carefully timed appearances behind their glittering night.

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards returned Sunday night with high expectations – Snoop Dogg at the helm as host and a handful of genuine megastars, including Taylor Swift and Madonna, on hand.

But besides a select few huge names, the lackluster talent list left viewers, and seemingly Paramount honchos, wanting more.

A source exclusively told The U.S. Sun that higher-ups at Paramount were furious about the show and are already discussing how the ceremony should be handled next year.

“[Execs] are not happy to put it lightly,” the source said. “Parts of last night was embarrassing.

“They couldn’t book big names besides the few A-listers they heavily featured.”

The insider went on to explain: “There is already a discussion over how next year will be handled but the show certainly cannot go on like this and they know it.

“Airing it on CBS as well as MTV was not a creative choice. They did it out of necessity to get more viewers after lower ratings in recent years.”

The source clarified that the show is not canceled, yet, but there will be “some crisis meetings” in the coming days to “figure out what the hell happened this year and to fix it so it doesn’t go that badly ever again.”

And despite the night’s hiccups, the ploy for increased ratings was a success as the 2026 VMAs saw the highest viewership in 10 years.

Despite the increased ratings, viewers took to social media throughout the night to complain that the VMAs felt noticeably light on its celebrity power.

One viewer called the red carpet an “influencer fest,” while another wrote that “the lack of actual major artists is so noticeable.”

Others questioned where the biggest names in music had gone as influencers and reality stars appeared to make up a significant portion of the guest list.

The absence was particularly noticeable given the VMAs’ history of turning celebrity attendance into an event in itself.

While A-listers such as Madonna, Taylor, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, LISA and Teyana Taylor were among the recognizable faces in the building, several major nominees – including Ariana Grande and Harry Styles – did not attend.

One of the biggest issues being discussed is whether CBS should remain part of the broadcast.

In a bid to increase viewership, this year’s ceremony was simultaneously carried by CBS and MTV, with parent company Paramount+ also streaming the event.

The decision turned into disaster on Sunday when an NFL game ran long on CBS, delaying the VMAs for viewers on TV for over 30 minutes.

Though the telecast was delayed, the show happened live – meaning clips from the awards show were circulating online before viewers had even seen them.

There were, however, plenty of moments that gave the ceremony genuine star power.

Madonna opened the show in her first VMA performance in more than two decades, bringing Sabrina and Charli into the spectacle for a major opening number.

The Queen of Pop ultimately dominated the night, taking home seven Moonman trophies, including Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration alongside Sabrina.

Taylor also made VMA history, becoming the most-awarded artist in the show’s history after winning Video of the Year for The Fate of Ophelia and Best Direction for Opalite.

The pop superstar, who also debuted her critically acclaimed music video for Patient Zero at the awards, also accepted the inaugural Artist Director Honor.

Taylor used one of her acceptance speeches to pay tribute to “the ultimate showgirl,” the late Dolly Parton, while Kacey Musgraves delivered an emotional pre-recorded performance of Dolly’s I Will Always Love You during the ceremony.
