‘Weapons’ Prequel ‘Gladys’ Adds Zach Shields as Co-Writer With Zach Cregger

As “Weapons” breakout character Aunt Gladys’ story continues with a highly-anticipated prequel movie, Zach Shields (“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”) has been tapped to co-write the screenplay alongside filmmaker Zach Cregger.

Fresh off Amy Madigan’s Oscar win for Weapons, the prequel to the hit Warner Bros. movie is taking shape. Deadline brings us the latest update on the project this afternoon.

According to the outlet, Weapons director Zach Cregger will write the screenplay for the Weapons prequel alongside Zach Shields (Krampus, Godzilla: King of the Monsters).

The working title for the Weapons prequel movie is Gladys, making it pretty clear that the film aims to tell the origin story of the villain played by Amy Madigan in Weapons.

Zach Cregger will also produce the upcoming prequel for Warner Bros. and New Line, though Deadline makes no mention of whether or not he’ll be back to direct the film.

We also don’t know at this time whether or not Amy Madigan will return.

Zach Cregger told Fangoria back in September, “There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullshit. I was ready. I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.”

It’s interesting to note that Cregger did cut some material from the Weapons script that would’ve delved a bit into the backstory of Aunt Gladys. It sounds like the Weapons prequel will expand upon the material that would’ve served as the film’s “Aunt Gladys” chapter.

But first up, the next film from Zach Cregger is a fresh take on the Resident Evil franchise, with Cregger directing the horror movie for theatrical release on September 18, 2026.
