William Orbit Says He’s Written a “Successor” to Madonna’s Classic ‘Ray Of Light’, But Queen of Pop Hasn't Responded

William Orbit says he’s written a “successor” to the classic Madonna album ‘Ray Of Light’, but he’s had “nil response” from her.

Madonna has been back in the studio in recent months, working again with British producer Stuart Price to put the finishing touches on Confessions on a Dance Floor 2. The Daily Mail reported last week that the singer has filmed a big-budget video for one of its tracks, so fingers crossed we can expect a release soon!

Although the original Confessions on a Dance Floor was a critical and commercial success when it dropped in 2005, its sales are outshone by an earlier work: 1998’s Ray of Light. That album, made in collaboration with another British producer and songwriter, William Orbit, was Madonna’s best-selling studio album of the 1990s.

Orbit briefly worked with Madonna again on 2012’s MDNA album, co-producing or co-writing six of the tracks.

“NOT going to happen”

In a new Facebook post, Orbit has addressed constant speculation as to whether he’ll work with Madonna again.

“Right. Let’s put this Madonna ROL [Ray Of Light] 2.0 thing to rest here and now folks. Can get exhausting. Is NOT going to happen,” Orbit said.

“Why don’t I just lay it out, cos I get asked constantly. I have an album ready that imho is indeed the successor to ROL.”

He added, “Everything about how it was made and how it sounds yells that from the first few bars. And I reached out. And there has been heard. Nil response. A week later. I speak with many close to her, including fam, but have not had a single syllable back in over two decades.”

This is likely a slight exaggeration, given MDNA was released in 2012.

“There I said it. I only sort of hint we’re pals so’s not to ignite a firestorm of speculation,” Orbit continued. “And wish nothing to come over as bitter because in my life and art now I’m finally where I want to be and the very opposite of bitter. Sweet as a nut. But interpersonl relations, you know. Human stuff. No idea whatsoever what’s in her head. I believe she is very happy, she looks fabulous and full of life in recent pics i’ve seen, although I don’t really follow . Busy lives all of us. But yeah, last time we spoke was at in Midtown Manhattan, MSR Studios, for MDNA.”

Orbit went on to say he had “Zero zero absolute zero hard feelings. Are you kidding, I will always love that woman. For real. She made my career. But am I crying? Look at me. Crying with mirth and glee these days. You can’t shut me up squeaking and squawking about the table of lovely musical goodies laid before me.”

He went on to say he was writing a book that would contain more candid reflections, adding he no longer gives “Zero f*cks. For the music biz.”

“So, for the history books, she doesn’t love me any more waaaaaaaaaaaah”

“awww.

“No icon for billy.

“Never mind, there’ll be another one along.

“For my ROL 2.”

Fans suggest other singers

In the replies, several commentators said the same thing. They urged Orbit to please contact Kylie Minogue and see if she’d be interested in what he’s created! On Instagram, some suggested Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga and FKA Twigs.

*****

While selfishly I wouldn't mind a sequel to Ray of Light, we already hear those musical influences in other artist's work such as FKA Twigs, Addison Rae, Caroline Polachek, Shygirl, Lorde, Billie Eilish and Arca. Besides, Madonna is currently focusing on a sequel to her other boundary-pushing dance album COADF.
