The Grammys aired last night, and I have to say it was the most entertaining show I've seen in quite a while. A lot of history was made during the ceremony as well.
Actress Viola Davis became an EGOT winner with her memoir Finding Me winning Best Spoken Word Album. Lizzo had me tap dancing and testifying like a pastor on the pulpit over her hilarious but inspiring winning speech.
While Kim Petras gagged the audience by proclaiming she was the first transgender woman to win a Grammy in her category, technically she was the second. She and Sam Smith won for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
House music icon Honey Dijon, who also identifies as trans snagged a Grammy for her work on Beyoncé's Renaissance album (Bey won in the Best Dance/Electronic Recording category, among others).
Speaking of Bey, with her four out of nine Grammy wins, the pop music icon officially became the GOAT of the Grammys, with a total of 32 awards thus far throughout her 20+ year career. That makes her the most decorated winner alive.
As for the performances, Bad Bunny opened the show, and his performance brought me to tears. It was great to see the overall love and culture of Latin music being represented on a mainstream awards show.
Lizzo definitely brought the house down on the lords day with her performance of About Damn Time and Special.
Harry Styles won me over with his live performance of As it Was, but what really got me up out of my seat was the 50 Year Hip Hop Tribute featuring appearances from LL Cool J, Big Boi, De La Soul, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Missy Elliott, Grandmaster Flash, Grandmaster Mele Mel & Scorpio, Ice T, Method Man, Nelly, Public Enemy, Queen Latifah, Rakim, Run DMC, Salt-N-Pepa, The Lox, Busta Rhymes, Lil Baby, GloRilla and more.
What surprised me was that they didn't incorporate Lil Kim, Diddy, Nas or even Nicki Minaj into the tribute, but with hip hop influencing music for half a decade it's impossible to slide every human contributor of the genre in the show.
Also, why didn't Jay Z perform? He was in the front row enjoying the show, and he's a huge contributor to hip hop. I get he was performing on stage with Khaled later in the evening, but he could have performed more than once.
I do find it quite strange that with Beyoncé winning 100 million Grammys that she's never snagged one for Album of the Year (that award went to Harry Styles and his third album Harry's House).
In a way it's kind of embarrassing on their part. They will throw Bey every bone except for AOTY. It's okay though. In regards to artistry and impact, Beyoncé is in a whole different stratosphere. Quiet as it's kept, the Grammys need her more than Beyoncé needs the Grammys.
Otherwise I was pretty much entertained by the show.
