Rising pop starlet Ava Max, who hit the pop stratosphere with her 2018 electro pop hit Sweet But Psycho, sat down for an interview with SiriusXM Volume.
In the interview she gave her thoughts on those Lady Gaga comparisons, and says based on her vocal range she assumed she’d be compared to Mariah Carey.
“They only compare women first of all, but I get it. The blonde hair, the pop music, the theatrics, we are both 5’2. I could go on and on. I get it. She is incredible, so it is an honor.”
“Never in a million years would I thought they would compare me to Lady Gaga and then it just started all of a sudden, I was like ‘that’s so cool,’ I thought it was gonna be like, Mariah Carey.”
She also said she wishes people would focus on artists for their vocal ability and less on their looks.
“They look at women with the look. They don’t hear what you sound like. They see your look, which is not cool. Stop comparing women’s looks.”
Based on the genre of music, the aesthetic of her music videos and live performances, it’s easier to compare Ava to Lady Gaga. As for the Mariah comment, I love you Ava, but I don’t see it.
As for judging people on looks, unfortunately due to the Era of MTV 30 years ago and the rise of the internet, we will always judge artists on their looks.
Unless you want to go anonymous like the recently broken up Daft Punk.
