On Monday (Nov. 2), it was announced that the pop vocalist will appear in a four-part “tell-all” Apple TV docuseries, where Jackson will allegedly make a cameo and share her perspective on her infamous 2004 Super Bowl halftime show wardrobe malfunction. During the performance, Timberlake pulled off a part of Jackson’s bustier while singing his 2003 hit “Rock Your Body.”
At the time, Jackson took on a brunt of public backlash, from being disinvited to the 2004 Grammy Awards to her music videos temporarily being pulled from MTV, VH1 and other music channels. In her 2022 Lifetime series, Janet, the five-time Grammy winner said she requested that Timberlake not make a statement on the controversy.
During the Tuesday (Nov. 3) episode of The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne argued that Jackson be left out entirely from Timberlake’s project, considering the incident to be outdated.
“What is there to talk about 22 years later?” Charlamagne said around the 24-minute mark of the video below. “You know how trivial that seems 22 years later? Back then, it was a big deal. ‘Oh my god, the titty on TV right in the middle of the Super Bowl.’ Now, that's nothing. Who cares?”
Charlamagne added that the Super Bowl didn’t change his “perception” of Jackson and joked that “all the white folks got scared of a little nipple.” Elsewhere in the show, Charlamagne joked that the radio co-hosts were “spending a lot of time on this titty.”
While Jackson hasn’t returned to the halftime show stage, Timberlake headlined the Super Bowl LII halftime show in 2018. In December, Jackson will hold a fortieth anniversary concert dedicated to her third album, Control, which will also be the focus of a documentary arriving in 2027.
