A weighty voice when it comes to Chucky has weighed in on Nicki Minaj‘s use the character in an AI-generated “Vote Red” post.

Don Mancini, who authored the story and co-wrote the screenplay for 1988’s Child’s Play, which ushered the murderous Chucky doll into horror history, issued a strong rebuke to the MAGA musician’s Tuesday X post. Timed to the 2026 midterm elections, Minaj wrote “HAPPY ELECTION DAY!!! ♥️🇺🇸✨” over an AI-generated image of Chucky clad in a Minaj-esque, all-pink get-up, looking at his phone while sporting a “Vote Red” pin.

Mancini wasn’t thrilled, to say the least.

“IMPOSTER. CHUCKY IS PART OF THE BLUE WAVE THAT WILL WASH AWAY ALL THE CORRUPTION,” the filmmaker wrote in the first of several responses to come.

In a separate post shared to his own page, Mancini provided several corrections to the implicit link Minaj made between Chucky and President Donald Trump’s conservative agenda, which Minaj has supported since 2025. “Chucky has a trans kid. Chucky protects the dolls. Chucky is anti-ICE. Chucky says ‘A BLUE WAVE is coming, as BLUE as my f---in’ eyes!’” he wrote.

The post contained a photo of Mancini’s own personal Chucky doll holding a labubu and another nightmarish doll with an “I Voted” sticker proudly displayed on his shirt. After the midterms yielded historic wins for Democrats across the country, Mancini returned to X to share the same image, but this time, with Chucky’s hair dyed blue, and wrote, “Too bad, Nicki! No AI, by the way! #bluewave.”

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for Mancini and Minaj for comment.

Mancini, who is gay, has long been outspoken about his progressive values. Speaking about the Chucky TV series in 2022, Mancini reflected in an interview with them, “As the world has evolved, we started to inject queer content into the franchise with Bride of Chucky.” Even his producing partner, David Kirschner, was “always very supportive of including queer characters, gay characters, nonbinary characters,” even though they encountered “some resistance from one regime at the studio.”

Indeed, 2004’s Seed of Chucky introduced Chucky’s child, called Glen by Chucky and Glenda by his wife, Tiffany (voiced by Jennifer Tilly). Now known as Gigi, or “Glen and Glenda,” the characters within the Child’s Play universe simply accept that Gigi possesses two distinct souls of different genders that manage to cohabitate.

Minaj, meanwhile, has not been so accepting of those living outside the gender binary.

Former fans of the musician have expressed their displeasure over her right-wing turn, blasting posts deemed both xenophobic and transphobic that she shares across her social media accounts. Minaj has become such a Trump loyalist that she even showed up outside a New Hampshire polling site on Tuesday, as votes were being cast.
