The cast of Scream 5 is starting to take shape. Following recent reports that Neve Campbell is in talks to reprise her role as Sidney Prescott, word on the street is that David Arquette, 48, is coming back to play Sheriff Dewey Riley. The actor is the first one to officially sign on for the fifth film in the franchise, and has played the character in all four Scream films.”I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my ‘Scream’ family, old and new,” Arquette told Variety.Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.”

Plot details for the new Scream film are under wraps but the film will be an original story co-written by James Vanderbilt (ZodiacThe Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not). Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of the filmmaking group Radio Silence (Ready or Not) will direct and the third member of the Radio Silence trio, Chad Villella, will executive produce alongside Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original Scream and Scream 2.

It’s impossible to fully express how much Wes Craven’s work and the Scream movies in particular mean to us as fans and have influenced us as storytellers,” Radio Silence said in a statement. “Kevin Williamson’s incredible stories have entertained and inspired us for decades and we’re insanely honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the cinematic world Wes and Kevin so brilliantly created together. Jamie and Guy’s amazing script does that legacy justice and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter of Scream to life.

Before Miss Rona postponed everything, Scream 5 was supposed to start filming this month. Spyglass has noted that filming is due to start later this year with COVID-19 safety protocols in place. Elsewhere, other “legacy” cast members are in conversations to reprise their roles. I’m very excited for a new Scream movie, and what I am hoping is that they can get Campbell as well as Arquette’s ex-wife Courteney Cox back as Gale Weathers.
