In some people’s eyes, Diddy got off easy with his recent prison sentence for transportation to engage in prostitution, the lesser of the charges he faced over the last year. However, he and his legal team are still committed to ensuring his total freedom, as they recently expressed their plan to appeal his punishment.

This past Friday (Oct. 3), the 55-year-old artist was sentenced to four years and two months in prison, plus handed a $500,000 fine, for charges that carried a maximum of 10 years each. This is viewed as the best-case scenario, as he was potentially facing life in prison had he been convicted of racketeering or sex trafficking.

However, the controversial mogul’s legal team took issue with the basis of how Judge Arun Subramanian arrived at the 50-month sentence. “Both the guidelines calculation and the sentence took account of conduct for which Mr. Combs was acquitted by a jury,” Marc Agnifilo, his defense attorney, told The New York Post. “We contend this amounts to legal error.”

Puff’s legal team believes that prosecutors incorrectly cited the Mann Act, which deems transporting people across state lines for sex to be a federal crime. Further, they have doubled down on the acts being consensual and thus mislabeled as crimes. His representatives confirmed with VIBE that nothing has been filed yet, but Agnifilo told The Post that the notice of appeal should be sent out “in the coming days.”

The Bad Boy co-founder had already spent a year behind bars, having been first arrested in September 2024. This could potentially lead him to get out of prison even earlier, and it is worth noting that there is no parole in the federal system. Time will tell what comes of the appeal, which is just the latest chapter in a chaotic, almost two-year period since Cassie first filed her rape and trafficking lawsuit against Diddy in November 2023.

The last few years have included several rape lawsuits coming from his ex-girlfriends, Homeland Security raiding his homes, footage of him assaulting Cassie surfacing online, his arrest, and his trial featuring Kid Cudi and several sex workers who allegedly engaged in his “freak offs.” Even after being acquitted and getting what some call a light sentence, the saga continues.

While I do agree that Diddy should have gotten more than four years, and I truly do not believe he has atoned for his sins, as he claimed in his strongly worded letter to the judge, the verdict that truly grinds my gears is the recent story regarding the founder and pastor of one of the largest megachurches in the US, Robert Morris, 64, getting six months in prison after pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl in Oklahoma in the 1980s.

Morris, an ex-Trump adviser was sentenced to 10 years in custody, but as part of a plea deal will serve only six months in county jail.

He will register as a sex offender and pay $250,000 in restitution.

So while both men are disgraceful human beings, we can't ignore the disparities when it comes how black men and white men are treated when to comes to how sentences are handed down in the US.
