Variety is reporting that Isabelle Fuhrman is set to reprise her chilling role as Esther in a prequel to the 2009 horror film Orphan. The original film served us a twist of all twists, where Esther turned out to be a murderous woman with proportional dwarfism pretending to be a 9-year-old girl.
No word on what the plot of the new film will be, but in the first film, it’s revealed that Esther is really a woman named Leena Klammer, who has murdered at least seven other people, including the last family who tried to adopt her.
The prequel will be helmed by The Boy and The Devil Inside filmmaker William Brent Bell, and David Coggeshall is penning the screenplay. Dark Castle Entertainment and Entertainment One are producing the new flick, which will begin filming soon.
The original film — which was produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, among others, and also starred Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard — earned $78 million worldwide on a reported $20 million budget.
Fuhrman has had roles in films such as The Hunger Games and appeared on the Showtime series Masters of Sex. She will be seen next in the January 2021 release Escape Room 2.
While I did most certainly gag when the twist in Orphan was revealed, I don’t know how I feel about a prequel. It’s obvious she will kill a lot of people and get away with murder, so making a film that shows her before the events of the original film feels like nothing more than a box office cash grab.
