It Appears SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Will Not Have An IMAX Release Next Summer - Here's Why

ree

There are several highly anticipated studio tentpoles on the docket for next year, and unsurprisingly, that means the summer movie schedule is stacked with high-profile titles that’ll be vying for ticket sales. In particular, July should be a very busy month, as that’s when Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day open within a couple of weeks of each other. The proximity between the two release dates will give Tom Holland fans their very own version of Barbenheimer, but it also has an impact on the Brand New Day release strategy. It looks like it’s going to be skipping premium formats.

According to new information shared by IMAX, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn't currently scheduled for an IMAX release. Why? Well, you can blame another Tom Holland movie...

IMAX has shared a look ahead to the movies that will play on its giant-sized screens in 2026 and 2027.

As well as confirming that Supergirl and Avengers: Doomsday are getting IMAX releases next year, it's revealed that Man of Tomorrow (or, Superman: Man of Tomorrow, as it's referred to here), The Batman 2, and Avengers: Secret Wars will similarly get the IMAX treatment in 2027.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, however, may be left out in the cold.

Set for release on July 31, 2026, the movie is sandwiched between two IMAX releases: Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (July 17) and Warner Bros.' Flowervale Street (August 14). Nolan's next movie getting an extended run in IMAX isn't surprising, but a month's exclusivity? It's happened before.

We'd be shocked if Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios aren't negotiating with IMAX to get at least some screens freed up next summer, but there's a good chance that Spider-Man: Brand New Day ultimately bypasses these premium theaters altogether.

It wouldn't be the first time this has happened. Earlier this summer, there was no room for Jurassic World Rebirth in IMAX, and it still made $888 million to become one of the year's highest-grossing titles. In the grand scheme of things, IMAX can add to a movie's box office, but it certainly isn't a big enough factor to decide whether anyone other than die-hard cinephiles sees a new movie.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is guaranteed to be a hit, no matter what screens it plays on. Anticipation is through the roof, and if what we see from fans here and on social media is any indication, it could outgross even Avengers: Doomsday.

On the plus side, Sony has managed to secure an IMAX release for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse in 2027.

"It really feels like we aren’t making the fourth movie. We’re making the first movie in the next chapter. This is a rebirth," Tom Holland, who also stars in The Odyssey, recently teased. "This is something completely new."

"I’m really glad people are picking up on the homage to Tobey and Andrew’s suit. I think the third movie was very much about paying respects to those guys. I really like the idea that he’s trying to be like his big brothers, that he looks up to them, and he sees little details on their suits that he thinks are really cool, and now that he is making his own suit and isn’t part of this bigger team."

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton directs Spider-Man: Brand New Day from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Tom Holland leads a cast that also includes Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, Tramell Tillman, Marvin Jones III, and Liza Colón-Zayas. Thunderbolts* star Florence Pugh has also joined the cast.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in theaters on July 31, 2026.
