JANELLE MONAE COMES OUT AS NONBINARY

Condragulations to queer artist/actor Janelle Monae, who has just come out as nonbinary.

They opened up about their gender identity on the season 5 premiere of (lets all roll our eyes collectively) Red Table Talk.

“I’m nonbinary, so I just don’t see myself as a woman, solely. I feel all of my energy,” they said. “I feel like God is so much bigger than the ‘he’ or the ‘she.’ And if I am from God, I am everything. I am everything. But I will always, always stand with women. I will always stand with Black women. But I just see everything that I am. Beyond the binary.”

This isn’t the first time Monáe has opened up about their identity. Speaking about their sexuality, they had previously come out as pansexual in 2018 during an interview with Rolling Stone.

“Being a queer black woman in America, someone who has been in relationships with both men and women, I consider myself to be a free-ass motherf*cker,” they told the magazine at the time. Though they initially identified as bisexual, they later clarified saying, “but then later I read about pansexuality and was like, ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too.’ I’m open to learning more about who I am.”

Many of Monae’s fans thought they came out as nonbinary back in 2020 when they tweeted out the hashtag #IAmNonbinary, but the singer said at the time they were just showing support by doing their part to bring awareness to the community during Nonbinary Day.

This just shows that as humans we’re always evolving, and we should always allow people the space to figure out who we are as human beings.
