After a successful first season run, Hulu has announced that Love, Victor will indeed be back for a second season. What I’m really excited about is that since the series moved from Disney+ to Hulu, the writers can explore more adult themes.
Looks like there’s more to Victor’s great love story! #LoveVictor is coming back for Season 2, only on @hulu! pic.twitter.com/VTxVqDYS7h — Love, Victor (@LoveVictorHulu) August 7, 2020
“We’d love to tell sexier stories,” showrunner Brian Tanen told TVLine. “That’s going to be so much more exciting on a network like Hulu, which, since they’ve adopted us, have been so supportive of the show and incredible partners.”
Tanen said that in addition to Nick Robinson’s Simon and Keiynan Lonsdale’s Bram, both of whom popped up in Season 1, he plans to bring more characters from the hit film into the second season.
Victor Salazar is played by actor Michael Cimino, who is straight. He said he based his portrayal on conversations he had with a gay cousin.
“I talked to my cousin, who is gay,” he told People Magazine. “He told me things that really hurt him and helped him [when he was coming out.] It was very special for both of us.”
Most recently, Cimino, 20, was named one of Variety‘s Power of Young Hollywood honorees for his work in the series. He also took the time to reflect on the positive feedback he has been getting.
“It’s been great seeing all this positive recognition for the show and how it’s affected people. It’s an honor to represent the LGBTQ community,” he said. “I want to be the person that represents their struggle, their story, their ethnicity, whatever it may be, and to represent them accurately by depicting them in a way that’s true to life.”
While I think Cimino does an excellent job portraying Victor, and I’m sure he means well, but isn’t it time we queer folks start telling our own stories and struggles?
Although the first season felt a bit too after-school special for my taste (which is no fault of Hulu’s), being a part of the Hulu family will allow the writers to explore certain topics without fear of being “too much for kids” to handle.
Young adults go through real things, and I’m excited to see these characters experience some real shit.
My favorite episode of the season was when Victor snuck off to New York to meet Simon, which in the end helped him discover who he really is without worrying about what others may think.
The writers are already at work on Season 2, but as of now, no release date has been announced.
