MALCOLM McDOWELL IN TALKS TO STAR IN THE LOST BOYS MUSICAL

After learning of director Joel Schumacher’s passing, it made me think of one of my favorite 80s horror films The Lost Boys.

So how excited was I to learn that G Tom Mac – the man behind The Lost Boys‘ theme song, ‘Cry Little Sister’ – has been developing a musical based on 1987’s classic vampire film. set to be titled A Lost Boys Story and taking place prior to the events of the film.

Speaking with Syfy Wire this week, the musician gave an update on the project and revealed that Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, Rob Zombie’s Halloween) is in talks to play head vampire Max!

Mac also tells Syfy Wire that the musical is “nearly done,” and that young actor JD McCrary (The Lion King) has already been cast as movie character Laddie.

“At 17-18 [years old], [David] hits the road, and that’s when he picks up the other vampires and basically creates a family with the three other guys,” Mac explains the plot of the musical.

“They all come from different walks of life in Middle America, the Midwest, Arizona, and then they head to California. That’s when all the good stuff starts. We tried to take a twist, whereby we know the story of the movie, but we don’t know how it all got there. And in the musical, we do. It’s very much a story of immortality, but it’s also a story about how people in their 20s think they’re immortal, anyway. It kind of runs that parallel of pop culture.”

Mac is expecting A Lost Boys Story to potentially hit Broadway in 2022.

Fingers crossed that the musical will have just the right amount of camp and memorable songs as the original film.
