‘Miami Vice’: Michael B. Jordan & Glen Powell Rumored For Joseph Kosinski’s ’80s-Set Undercover Cop Remake

ree

Earlier it was reported that the latest adaptation of the Miami Vice film will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who has directed Top Gun: Maverick (2022) and F1 (2025), amongst other things. The latest update about the project is that, Glen Powell and Michael B Jordan are in talks to headline the film.

The new rumbling comes from Nexus Point News, which has developed quite a decent record for breaking genre casting news like this, but the reporting hasn’t been backed up by the trades just yet. While a believable duo, and we have to imagine scheduling would have to be ironed out first, given that “Miami Vice” is expected to get in front of cameras next year, we’re still cautiously optimistic.

If you’re not familiar with “Miami Vice,” it focuses on a group of extremely cool undercover vice cops that infiltrate various criminal groups posing as fellow crooks to take them down from within. It first launched with the Michael Mann-produced TV series that debuted back in 1984 and was eventually rebooted by Mann himself in 2006 as the feature film version, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.

Another interesting tidbit is that it’ll be a period actioner, set in the 1980s rather than being a contemporary version like the previous Mann film.

Being “in talks” doesn’t mean the two have signed deals or will ultimately walk away with the roles, as both actors are increasingly busy but given the high-profile nature of the project seeing Kosinki reunite with his “Top Gun: Maverick” actor wouldn’t be all that shocking and Jordan, of course, has sky-rocketed into an action lead after the “Creed” trilogy, “Black Panther,” and reuniting with Ryan Coogler for his vampire pic “Sinners.”

Currently, Jordan is directing Amazon MGM Studios‘ remake of “The Thomas Crown Affair” with an aim to direct “Creed IV” (at some point) and is still poised to reprise the John Clark role in “Rainbow Six” for director Chad Stahelski (“Highlander,” “John Wick” franchise).

Universal Pictures, which is behind the latest version of the action flick, announced that “Miami Vice” would be arriving in theaters on August 6, 2027, and that date would telegraph that production will begin sometime in 2026.

*****

Joseph Kosinski has a flair for making beautifully shot films, and I trust this film will be good. While the major trades or any of the usual scoopers haven't reported on this news, I hope this rumor is true, because Glen and MBJ would be perfect casting. In the meantime, I will file this away in the rumor file until proven otherwise.
