NEVE CAMPBELL ADDRESSES SCREAM 5 RETURN

A few months ago it was announced that a fifth chapter in the Scream franchise was given the green light, with directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready Or Not) set to take over for the late Wes Craven.

Kevin Williamson, who wrote Scream, Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer and a laundry list of 90s/early 00s horror films starring just about every TV actress associated with the WB (now CW) will not be writing the fifth film, but will executive produce alongside Chad Villella. William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein.

And as far as plot goes, Discussing Film was able to share a brief one-line synopsis for the film, telling us that it will follow a young woman who returns to her hometown to uncover who’s been committing a series of vicious crimes. What they’re hoping is that the new film will be the first in a new trilogy.

When I initially heard the news, I often wondered if Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott character would be appearing in the franchise at some capacity, passing the torch to the next scream queen and her band of friends/victims at the hands of Ghostface.

On a possible return to the Scream franchise, Campbell said: They’ve come to me and we’re having conversations. It’s a little hard at the moment because of COVID to know when that’ll happen. Hopefully, we can see eye to eye on all of the elements that have to come into place for it to happen. I originally had been very apprehensive about doing another Scream movie without Wes because he’s such a genius and he is the reason they are what they are. But the directors who have come to me have come with such a great appreciation for Wes’ work and really want to honor it. And that meant a lot to me. Hopefully, we’ll be able to do it.

Scream 5 was supposed to start shooting this month, but due to Miss Rona, production has been put on hold until further notice. I have heard an interesting twist in the film pertaining to Sidney, that SPOILER being that she actually turns out to be Ghostface in the film. I thought that would be an interesting twist, seeing that members of Sidney’s family have been killed off in all four films that Campbell has starred in.

Sidney has been traumatized so much by what has happened to her throughout the two decades she’s played the character that she loses it and becomes the killer herself. It’s a way to deal with how traumatic incidents either make you stronger through years of therapy, or you become a doomsday prepping alcoholic (like Laurie Strode in Halloween 2018) or a serial killer. Whether or not that’s the direction the film decides to take, it would be great to see Neve back on the big screen as Sidney once more.
