Hulu has given a series order to the reboot series, helmed by Elgin James, PEOPLE has confirmed. The new show will return to the same universe as the original series, which starred Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell, but will follow new characters and a new story.
The cast of the reboot includes Emily Browning, who will play Cassidy, Drake Rodger as Tommy and Lukas Gage, who will play Jackson. Clayton Cardenas, JR Bourne, Georgie Flores and Myles Bullock will also star.
Per the official logline, the reboot follows Browning, an "ex-soldier turned corrections officer [who] takes a job at one of the deadliest prisons in America to prove just how far she’ll go for someone she loves."

Dawn Olmstead, who was an executive producer on the original series, will return behind the camera, too, for the reboot.
In a post on Instagram reacting to the pilot order, Rodger, 26, wrote that he was "beyond grateful to be a part of the universe," and Gage, 30, celebrated the news too.
"Les gooo," Gage wrote.
The reboot's series order comes eight years after the final episodes of the original series aired in 2017. The show's fifth and final season, which aired on Fox, came eight years after its fourth season had aired in 2009.
In the original series, Miller played Michael Scofield, a man so desperate to prove his incarcerated brother Lincoln's (Purcell) innocence that he got himself imprisoned so they could break out together, saving Lincoln from his fate in death row.
There was speculation that Purcell and Miller could return for a sixth season of the show, but Miller, 53, shut that down in 2020 as he wrote in an Instagram post he was "out" of the universe "officially," and not because of "static on social media."
"I just don't want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told)," he wrote. "So. No more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons... I understand this is disappointing. I'm sorry."

Miller, who came out as gay in 2013, also wrote in the same post that he would be disabling comments on his page due to "the possibility of queer kids visiting here, recently out of the closet or exploring the idea... I don't want them exposed to bulls—."
Miller's confirmation that he wouldn't reprise Michael Scofield came days after Purcell, 55, had teased in his own Instagram post that season 6 of Prison Break would be happening.
He addressed a number of rumors in the post's caption, including whether he was bald, but regarding the show, he wrote, "Rumor number 3, Will season pb 6 happen. Yes."
