‘Tron: Ares’ Sets Disney+ Streaming Release Date


“Tron: Ares” will park its light cycle at Disney+, as the movie arrives on the streamer on Jan. 7.



The news comes after the latest chapter in the Tron franchise debuted in theaters October 10, opening to $33.2 million at the domestic box office. To date, the sci-fi actioner has grossed $142.2 million globally.


Directed by Joachim Rønning with a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow, Tron: Ares centers on a sophisticated AI military program named Ares (Leto) who is sent from the Grid into the real world on a dangerous mission, resulting in the first clash between AI beings and humanity. Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Gillian Anderson also star along with original Tron star Jeffery Bridges.


The original score and soundtrack were done by the reunited Nine Inch Nails featuring band members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who previously teamed under their own names to win Original Score Oscars for Soul and The Social Network.


Disney said at launch Tron: Ares will be available in Imax Enhanced on Disney+, featuring Imax’s expanded aspect ratio and DTS sound on certified TVs and AV receivers.


Tron: Ares will join 1982’s Tron and 2010’s Tron: Legacy which are already available on the streaming service.
