Zac Efron, who currently stars on the Netflix docu-series Down to Earth, and is set to star in the upcoming remake to Three Men and a Baby, is set to star in Blumhouse’s Firestarter remake. He will play Andy McGee, father of Charlie McGee.
Based on the classic Stephen King novel (which celebrated it’s 40th anniversary yesterday); the book centered on Charlie, an eight-year-old girl who gained the ability to manipulate fire after her parents participated in government-sponsored experiments during their college years. These experiments also gave Andy his own power of mind control. The novel follows Charlie and her father as they go on the run from the government agency that wants to turn her into a living weapon.
Keith Thomas (The Vigil) is directing the latest iteration that is being adapted by writer Scott Teems (Halloween Kills, Rectify), who will also executive produce. The original film adaptation of the book was released in 1984 and starred Drew Barrymore as Charlie. The film, which received mostly negative reviews from critics grossed $17m at the domestic box office.
I personally think Zac is a great choice, since he’s been looking very daddy-like as of late. I’m very curious as to who they will choose to play Charlie.
As for Blumhouse, I usually trust their judgement in regards to their casting choices, but I will say as a fan of Halloween I wasn’t entirely sold on the 2018 remake, and some of the character decisions made in that script.
I’m also not that excited for their sequel to The Craft. However, their reimagining of The Invisible Man definitely got me all the way together, so with that being said, I’m excited to see their take on Firestarter.
