Start your engines, because what even is gender?

As an infamous Drag Race social media post once read: the crown is up for grabs! And for the first time in Drag Race history, a king is in contention.

The cast of Canada’s Drag Race season six has been announced, and it features 39-year-old Montreal-based performer Velma Jones, the first AFAB (Assigned Female At Birth) queen to star in the Canadian franchise.

In their Meet The Queens video though, Velma revealed that sometimes, they also appear on stage in drag king mode as performer Johnny Jones.

“Are you ready to make herstory with me? Because I’m your first drag queen being a cis woman,” they said.

“And also, you’re getting the special two-for-one because you got Velma, and sometimes, here’s Johnny.

“I can’t wait to show you my drag king persona Johnny also. I’m here to prove that I can do anything like the others.”

Johnny Jones is the first drag king to be cast on any season of Drag Race globally since the reality show began 16 years ago.

Former stars of the show including Bimini, Ginger Johnson, and Victoria Scone – who was the first ever cisgender woman cast on a Drag Race franchise – have previously voiced their hope that Drag Race would start casting drag kings.

Earlier this year, the first ever reality competition featuring drag kings, King of Drag, premiered on Revry.
