Drag Race Alum Plane Jane Explains Why She Was Cast on Project Runway, Shade's Law Roach’s ‘Bus Driver Wig’ After Exit

Former RuPaul's Drag Race star Plane Jane clashed with Project Runway judge Law Roach after he criticized her for reusing a look from Drag Race.

Plane Jane took off almost as quickly as she landed as one of the first designers eliminated from Project Runway season 22.

Now, the RuPaul’s Drag Race season 16 finalist and House of Villains star is reacting to her brief time on the show (alongside fellow season 16 queen Q) in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, during which she explains how she was cast on the Heidi Klum-fronted reality competition series and how she really feels about Drag Race judge Law Roach reading her on the Project Runway stage — complete with a few signature (and comically turbulent) reads of Plane’s own.

PLANE JANE: I got scouted! The casting producer reached out to my manager, Maddie, and I heard of the offer through that. I went through the entirety of the casting process. There was no foul play. Nothing unusual or off-the-books. They thought that, after all was said and done, I was perfect for the show.

People forget that you received strong praise from the Drag Race judges on the DollHouse design challenge.

I’ve become so known and notorious off the show for being outspoken, and people forget a lot of the talents that I possess and what allowed me to succeed on Drag Race in the first place.

Law read you on Project Runway for reusing a look from the Drag Race season 16 premiere. On episode 1, Heidi Klum and Christian Siriano explained that you were asked to bring one look from home and weren’t given constraints. How long did you have?

Maybe a week before we left, they specified that we needed to bring a look from home to be judged. In my mind, I was like, there’s no way that we’re going to be straight-up judged on something we didn’t make there. I brought options and invented challenges in my mind. I took whatever prompt they gave at face value. Maybe we’d have to make [another look] inspired by it. I wasn’t anticipating we’d be judged on that…. As is. I brought a few looks, and production said I had to choose. I was like, “I guess this one. S---!” We had time to alter it, and it walked down the runway. Just like that, it was game over for Miss Plane, I guess.

Was there more to the exchange with Law during judging that we didn’t see on the air?

Not really. It happened just like that. I set Law up for a few zingers with that response. I’m not too mad at it. The critiques were pretty brief. I mostly heard from Law, and I take no offense to that critique at all. I wouldn’t say my look was criticized in a way that would make me question my career path. My career path was in fact reaffirmed by Law saying that this is a drag look and perhaps not a look meant for this particular show.

Would you like to read any of Law’s looks in return?

Law has a lot of interesting and questionable wig choices. From the short black wig to the short blonde wig. An Ellen DeGeneres, Jane Lynch ‘do with visible lace he had on. Law has some questionable hair and fashion choices for himself. But, you can’t say that whatever Law has been picking out for Zendaya recently hasn’t been impeccable. She’s the only girl who’s doing it on red carpets these days. That’s why Law is a celebrity stylist; Law is known for curating sickening looks for his celebrity clients, but maybe sort of skimping out on himself, unfortunately. As a drag queen, I relate to that because I’d say I’m a celebrity stylist for Plane Jane. I curate sickening outfits when I need to, but out of drag, as Andrew, I spend a little less time on him. Law is in the same mentality, like, “I can wear whatever, girl. I can slap on this shake-and-go bus driver wig with visible lace, as long as my client is happy.” [Laughs]

Discord Addams had pointed words for Law when she was eliminated from Drag Race season 18. She suggested in her EW exit interview that Law’s comments were mean. How do you feel about Law’s critiques in general?

Law knows he’s making TV. I think Law is outspoken like me, and shares his honest opinions with the knowledge that more absolute statements like “this is hideous,” the more he speaks like that, the more traction it gets. Behind those critiques is honesty and truth. I don’t think he does it to be mean…. I’ll never take something that somebody like Law says to heart, especially on a show like Project Runway where I was just happy to be there. I wasn’t looking for validation in my design. Perhaps if Law said something like that to me on Drag Race, maybe I’d be singing a different tune like Discord Addams. Unlike Discord, I could never perform poorly on Drag Race because I’m not horrible at f---ing drag like she is. Oop! [Laughs]

(When reached for comment on Plane’s comment, Discord tells EW: Luckily for me I didn’t perform poorly on Drag Race either. My comment was how Law is mean to everyone, not me specifically. Nor do I have to resort to rage bait for engagement because, unlike Plane, I’m not horrible at drag like she is. Just kidding — if she really believed that, she wouldn’t have been in my house begging me to audition for Drag Race since she’s been dying to see me on it since transformations with James St. James.)

After your elimination, you said on the show that it was a waste of time. Do you still feel that way?

I rescind my statement that it was a waste of time! I would’ve loved to stay a little bit longer. I’m so delusional that even after seeing my look on the runway, I was under the impression that I was safe. I don’t think any appearance on any network is a waste of time…. I’m happy to do any other TV show. I hope that what my stint on Project Runway has shown is that I will not say no to anything. I hope other networks and programs were watching, and hopefully you’ll see me on the Great British Bake-Off soon!
