Halle Berry’s ex-husband Olivier Martinez claims he earns just $776 a month in acting residuals. Still, the French actor once had a successful Hollywood career and his own business ventures before becoming financially connected to the Oscar winner.
The 60-year-old actor is requesting $240,000 in legal fees from Berry following their contentious custody battle over their 13-year-old son, Maceo. According to documents, Martinez claims he cannot afford his attorneys, despite reporting monthly living expenses of $17,555.99 and approximately $43,206 in financial accounts.
However, his financial history is considerably more complicated than his latest income declaration suggests.
Long before meeting Berry, Martinez had built a legitimate acting career in France. Born in Paris in 1966, he came from a working-class family and held various jobs before pursuing acting at age 23.

His breakthrough came with the 1993 French drama Un, deux, trois, soleil, which earned him the César Award for Most Promising Actor in 1994. The prestigious French honor helped establish him as a rising talent.
He followed that success with The Horseman on the Roof in 1995 and The Chambermaid on the Titanic in 1997, establishing himself as an internationally recognized actor before making his Hollywood breakthrough.
American audiences became familiar with Martinez through Before Night Falls in 2000 and the 2002 thriller Unfaithful, where he starred opposite Diane Lane and Richard Gere.
The following year, he appeared alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Farrell in the action film S.W.A.T. He later joined Angelina Jolie in Taking Lives in 2004.
These were major studio productions, although his individual salaries have not been reliably disclosed. Consequently, there is no verified public accounting of how much Martinez accumulated during his most commercially visible years.

His financial activities also extended beyond acting.
In 2012, Martinez was identified as one of three owners of Villa Azur, an upscale Mediterranean restaurant and lounge in Miami Beach. His business partners were hospitality entrepreneurs Michael Martin and Jean-Philippe Bernard.
The venture opened in South Beach, offering French Mediterranean cuisine and a luxury nightlife experience. Local reporting confirmed Martinez’s ownership involvement during the restaurant’s early years.
By 2019, he was also identified as a partner in La Cave d’Azur, a wine-focused establishment connected to Villa Azur.
Those investments establish that Martinez pursued income opportunities outside Hollywood. However, the businesses’ profitability, his ownership percentages, and whether he currently receives distributions have not been publicly established.
Martinez met Berry while filming Dark Tide in 2010. They married in France in July 2013, welcomed Maceo that October, and announced their separation in 2015.
Their divorce proceedings stretched nearly eight years before the former couple settled in August 2023.
That agreement introduced a significant documented financial arrangement between them.
Berry agreed to pay Martinez $8,000 monthly in child support, equivalent to $96,000 annually. She also agreed to pay an additional 4.3% of her income above $2 million.

The settlement required Berry to cover Maceo’s private school tuition, school-related expenses, extracurricular activities, and health insurance.
Those expenses were separate from Martinez’s monthly support payments.
For comparison, the $8,000 monthly child support obligation alone was more than ten times the $776.34 Martinez now reports receiving in average monthly acting residuals.
However, child support is intended for a child’s care and should not automatically be treated as unrestricted personal earnings. The available reporting also does not confirm whether every provision of the original agreement remains unchanged following subsequent custody rulings.
Martinez has continued acting, although his recent filmography is far less extensive than during his Hollywood breakthrough.
His credits include the Apple TV+ comedy Loot in 2022, the film Deauville in 2023, and the French production Tigres & Hyènes in 2024.

Acting residuals represent payments performers may receive when qualifying productions are reused or distributed. They are separate from original acting salaries, business earnings, investment returns, and child support.
Martinez’s reported $776.34 monthly residual figure therefore does not establish his complete financial picture.
His latest filing also lists $176,522.58 in unpaid attorney fees and requests another $63,477.42 for anticipated legal expenses.
The request follows an October 2026 custody ruling that maintained Martinez’s temporary primary physical custody of Maceo while dissolving a restraining order he had obtained against Berry. Berry denied the abuse allegations underlying that order.
A judge has not been reported to have approved the $240,000 fee request.
