Russell Brand, the former actor and comedian, was convicted Thursday on three counts of sexual assault and one count of rape in his London criminal trial. He was found not guilty of two other rape charges and a count of attempted indecent assault.

The disgraced comedian was acquitted of two other rape charges and a count of attempted indecent assault, according to the BBC.

The judge, Mr Justice Bennathan, informed Brand that “obviously a custodial sentence of some length will result” and said it was unlikely he would extend the former comedian’s bail any further.

“You’ve been convicted of a number of offenses, including one of rape,” he said. “My current view is that I therefore have to remand you in custody not least because the temptation to avoid coming back to court to receive that sentence will be overwhelming.”

He allowed both Brand’s legal team and the Crown Prosecution Service a break of 20 minutes before returning to make submissions as to whether bail should be extended. Ultimately, however, the judge denied the application to extend bail and remanded him into custody until Monday, when he will return to receive his sentence. As Brand was taken to the cells, he mouthed “I’m OK” and “I’m good” to his lawyers and gave a thumbs-up sign, according to Sky News.

In the U.K., a rape conviction can result in up to 19 years in prison and potentially even a life sentence, depending on the seriousness of the offense. The maximum sentence for sexual assault is 10 years.

Sky News reported that the Met Police are now investigating further allegations of rape made by two women.

Brand did not visibly react when the verdicts were read out. His wife, Laura Gallacher, rushed out of the courtroom when Brand was taken to the cells to wait before his bail application.

Brand was accused of raping three women at various locations between 1999 and 2009. One of the alleged victims also accused him of sexual assault in addition to oral rape. He was also accused of one count of attempted indecent assault at MTV’s U.K. offices in 2001 and one count of sexual assault in 2009.

The jury was on its third day of deliberations when it reached the verdict, following a three-week trial.

Convictions

Rape

On Nov. 5, 2026, Brand was found guilty of raping a woman at his former home in London in 2009.

Days after Brand met the woman at the Hammersmith Apollo theatre where he’d been performing a comedy show, she visited his home in London.

There, they had consensual sex before Brand anally raped her.

The victim told the court that Brand “hurt me and harmed me and when I asked him to stop he didn’t.”

Three counts of sexual assault

Brand was also convicted of three counts of sexual assault during his trial in November 2026.

One of the counts was from Brand assaulting a woman at a bar in London in 2004.

At the time, Brand grabbed the woman’s breasts while they were chatting at the bar at a birthday party in Soho.

In a second count, Brand sexually assaulted a woman in either 2004 or 2005 at the Choice FM studios in London.

The actor grabbed the woman’s face and kissed her before touching her breasts and butt.

For the third and final sexual assault charge, Brand was convicted of laying his head on a woman’s groin area — without her consent — while working on a Channel 4 project in 2009.

The woman claimed Brand’s mouth and nose were in her vaginal area.

“Russell Brand was predatory and used his celebrity status to commit sexual crimes,” senior Crown prosecutor David Roberts told CBC News.

“He was a manipulator with an insatiable desire to get what he wanted, regardless of whether consent was given or not,” Roberts added.

Acquitted charges

Two counts of rape

Brand was acquitted of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault during his criminal trial.

One of the rape charges stemmed from an alleged incident in 1999 that took place inside a hotel room during a political party conference.

A woman claimed a naked Brand allegedly pushed her onto the bed, removed her underwear and raped her.

Attempted indecent assault

The count of attempted indecent assault involved an allegation from 2001, when a female MTV employee claimed Brand grabbed her arm and tried to drag her into a men’s bathroom at the network’s London office.

Accusations

The “Get Him to the Greek” actor is facing two additional rape accusations following his guilty verdict.

A then-16-year-old schoolgirl claimed during a pre-trial court hearing that she dated Brand when he was 30.

In a statement to Sky News, the Met Police said the investigation “remains ongoing.”

“The suspect has previously been interviewed under caution in connection with the allegations,” they said. “Files have been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to both complainants.”

“Detectives remain in close contact with prosecutors as enquiries continue and further investigative work is carried out.”
