Idris Elba: I Was Never In The James Bond Race

Idris Elba says he was never in talks for James Bond, despite years of speculation and fan campaigns.

Amazon MGM Studios announced earlier that the “search for the next James Bond is underway” with the casting process expected to take place this Summer.

The Golden Globe-winning “The Wire” and upcoming “Masters of the Universe” star has long been one of the most common names suggested as ideal James Bond candidates for much of the past decade or so.

But this week, while out promoting the latter film, he tells People magazine he’s not in the running:

“My name’s not getting thrown out, no way. They’re going younger. And I wish them all the luck of the world. I can’t wait — it’s going to be amazing. I’m honestly not in the race ever. I wasn’t in the race in the first place.”

Casting director Nina Gold is working with director Denis Villeneuve and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman on the search for who will next play Bond next, and whoever is cast must “ooze sex appeal”.

Whoever is cast is expected to appear in the role for at least three films.

There have been a few names floating around as to who can play James Bond: Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner, Tom Holland, Harris Dickinson, Regé-Jean Page, Theo James, Aaron Pierre and Aaron Taylor Johnson's have all been rumored to be considered.

I would have loved to see Idris play Bond maybe 15 years ago when he wasn't well known, but if they are looking for someone to play Bond for at least three films, I think Idris is too old (he's 53). If you were playing Bond as an aging spy, then it would work.

Speaking of aged out Henry Cavill's name has also been floated around as to play Bond, but now that he's in his mid forties he would be considered too old as well. I'm definitely excited to see him play Duncan McCleoud in Chad Stahelski's Highlander remake.

If he isn't cast as T'Challa Jr aka the new Black Panther, my other pick to play a young Bond would be the other Idris - Damson Idris.
