Official Synopsis Revealed for Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ Movie

During its CinemaCon presentation on Monday night, Sony offered a first look at the new Resident Evil film from Weapons and Barbarian helmer Zach Cregger.

Zach Cregger reteams with Weapons star Austin Abrams for Resident Evil later this year, a brand new horror movie based on the iconic video game franchise. Cregger is getting set to unleash a non-stop nightmare that puts his own fresh spin on Resident Evil mythology, and the film was part of Sony Pictures’ presentation at CinemaCon tonight.

While footage shown off at the event will not be making its way online, we do have an official synopsis for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie out of CinemaCon tonight…

Austin Abrams (Weapons) plays Bryan, a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in a nonstop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.

Zach Cregger told CinemaCon attendees tonight that his Resident Evil is a “big, scary ride,” one that follows Bryan on his hellish descent through a snowy, monster-filled landscape.

Cregger teases that we’ll be “locked in with a protagonist on a foot journey through a world hell bent on destroying them.” The film has been compared to George Miller’s Fury Road. Producer Roy Lee told Geek Tyrant in February, “It’s like a roller coaster ride of nonstop action, of just showing a point of view of a character and an original story in the world of Raccoon City.”

Cregger has made one thing clear: “I’m definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games. I’m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.” We expect the Resident Evil trailer very soon. Stay tuned.

Directed by Cregger from a script he co-wrote with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapters 3 and 4), Resident Evil opens in theaters on September 18, 2026 from Sony Pictures.
